GeoInt Crowdsourcing Presentation
GeoInt Crowdsourcing Presentation
Matt Ball
On February 4th, 2015 I gave a talk to the UC Berkeley CITRIS Research Exchange Seminar Series Abstract: As internet and communications technologies rapidly advance, digital tools are transforming the lives of people around the globe. However, access to these tools remains unevenly distributed, and very rarely are new technologies designed by and for the most vulnerable communities. What happens when traditionally marginalized groups are placed at the center of this process? What new tools are created? How are these leveraged for environmental and human rights purposes? From mobiles and mapping to data collection and storytelling, this talk will focus on the lessons learned and approaches pioneered by Digital Democracy’s work in dozens of countries over the past 6 years. From addressing gender-based violence in Haiti to combatting oil contamination and deforestation in the Amazon, Dd’s partnerships with grassroots organizations demonstrate the possibilities for technology to be effectively leveraged by local groups.

TechSoup Global and Guardian Seminar: Transforming your charity by bringing your data to life seminar. Presentation by Nathaniel Manning, Director of Business Development and Strategy at Ushahidi illustrated how they use crowdsourcing, big data and the opensource tools they have developed to help with disaster relief, political accountability and other development issues. Mobile phones were identified as one of the key ways that data is provided and collected in developing countries.

In our current reality of declining resources and increased transparency in accountability, how do schools maximize the learning experience for all students? One constructive method allowing all learners to get a second dose of targeted learning and providing students who fall into the tier three category with continued reading support is by utilizing a collaborative school-wide approach. Incorporating data analysis to personalize instruction for all students has lead to measurable student growth at Canterbury Elementary. This model was initially designed and implemented to guide our instruction during intervention time. However, it has quickly evolved to the point of making a fundamental impact on how we think about working with all students in all subjects outside the intervention block. Student data including screeners, benchmarking and progress monitoring tools, is analyzed by grade level teams with support staff every six weeks. This data is used to group students for intervention based on what they need to help them become more successful readers at all levels. Furthermore, it is used to help with strategy grouping and conferencing within the Readers' Workshop. For example, last year in first grade before our first round of intervention, 17% of 1st grade students were a year or more below grade level. By the end of the year, only 3% of students fell a grade level or more below.

Data isn’t stored in a vault where no one can touch it. Both business and technical professionals need the right access to the data, and need to work together to ensure that they all have the same understanding as to what the data means. Ron Huizenga, Senior Product Manager for ER/Studio, will discuss and demonstrate how data models, business glossaries, and collaboration can enhance your data architecture.

Designing novel computer systems and optimizing their software is becoming too tedious, ad hoc, time consuming and error prone due to enormous number of available design and optimization choices. Empirical autotuning combined with run-time adaptation and machine learning has been demonstrating some potential to address above challenges for several decades but is still far from the widespread production. The main reasons include unbearably long exploration and training times, ever changing tools and their interfaces, lack of a common experimental methodology, lack of diverse and representative benchmarks, and lack of unified mechanisms for knowledge building and exchange apart from publications where reproducibility and reusability of results is often not even considered. I will present our community-driven solution to above problems based on our open-source Collective Knowledge technology (CK) that can gradually organize, exchange and reuse knowledge and experience in computer engineering. CK helps share various artifacts (benchmarks, data sets, libraries, tools) as unified, reusable and Python-based components with JSON meta description via GITHUB. Researchers can then quickly prototype and crowdsource various experimental workflows such as performance and energy autotuning, design space exploration and run-time adaptation. At the same time, CK continuously analyzes and extrapolates all collected knowledge using powerful data science techniques to automatically model computer systems' behavior, predict better optimizations or hardware configurations, and eventually enable faster, more power efficient, reliable and self-tuning software and hardware. Furthermore, CK can record any unexpected behavior in a reproducible way and expose it to an interdisciplinary community to find missing features and improve models. Live demo of our approach is available at http://cknowledge.org/repo .

It’s easy to find and create data. But what are you going to do with it? Can I ask the world complex questions such as what’s the local crime rate, distance to metro, or rating of my local school? Can you combine these all together to rate houses you may want to buy? And how do you then connect back to your government and local businesses to engage in collaborative decision making. This talk with discuss how you should consider users and their personal interactions with data and information. We’ll also peel back the covers on how open source tools such as HBase, Cascading, Geos and Polymaps handle analyzing and streaming realtime data to maps and visualizations both on the web and to mobile devices. To illustrate what’s possible, we’ll dive through GeoCommons, a large online community of data sharing and community analytics that uses open source mapping visualization, Hadoop analysis, and mobile interfaces to provide this to the world. Users can even build and socialize their own analysis methods to share their expert knowledge with other users. We’ll also review how global organizations like the World Bank and United Nations are using these tools to connect with citizens in developing countries to empower them to make decisions on building investment and understanding how climate science may affect their areas.

We have built amazing technology that finds our friends, places to go, and tracks our media. But is that the only legacy we want to leave behind? What else can our technology be useful for in meaningful ways? Learn how my transition from Silicon Valley to Washington, DC changed my perspective and the realization that we can have an amazing impact on citizens and communities around the world in finding clean water, shelter, and government engagement.

With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
