6. What are the Hallmark Awards? The Hallmark Awards are based on competitively-judged applications they recognize individuals, chapters and regions for excellence in the Society’s Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship as exemplified through Honors in Action activities. The annual competition is open to all active Phi Theta Kappa chapters. The 2011 Hallmark Awards competition will have new categories that better reflect Honors in Action. This integrated approach to chapter programming encourages chapters to use the Honors Study Topic as their foundation to incorporate all four Hallmarks – Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship – into their projects. The current Scholarship, Leadership and Service Hallmark Awards categories will be replaced with an Honors in Action Project Award AND a College Project Award. The Honors in Action Award will allow chapters to report on ONE in-depth Honors in Action Project based on an issue from the current Honors Program Guide, The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril and Promise. The College Project Award will give greater emphasis to the Five Star Chapter Development Plan by allowing chapters to submit entries based on the College Project required at the Three Star Level.

7. Distinguished Chapter Officer Team This new award recognizes a chapter’s entire officer team for outstanding accomplishments and teamwork. It is modeled after the Regional Officer Team Award. A chapter advisor may nominate their entire chapter officer team for this award. The officers should demonstrate an exceptional atmosphere of teamwork, leadership abilities, promotion of Honors in Action and other engagement in the Society, and enthusiasm for the Society’s Hallmarks.

8. Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Application Requirements Cite up to three examples of how the chapter officers demonstrated an atmosphere of teamwork. How did the chapter officers assist the chapter in meeting its goals? Cite up to three specific examples in which the Chapter Officer Team promoted Honors in Action and/or engaging in the Society through Five Star Chapter Development Plan, Five Star Competitive Edge Plan for members, CollegeFish.org, scholarship opportunities, Hallmark Awards, regional and/or international events, etc. What is the most significant impact the Chapter Officer Team had on the chapter and/or college? Judging Rubrics – For all of the award categories rubrics can be found on Phi Theta Kappa’s website.

9. Distinguished Chapter Officer Awards Distinguished Chapter Officers are selected based on the recipients’ demonstration of leadership, promotion of Honors in Action and other engagement in the Society, and enthusiasm for the Society’s Hallmarks. International Officers are not eligible for this award during their year of tenure. The chapter may nominate up to two individual officers for this category, including a chapter president. However, team leaders or committee chairpersons may not be nominated for this award. A student may receive this award only once.

10. Distinguished Chapter Member Awards The Distinguished Members are selected based on the student’s embodiment of the Hallmarks of the society through Honors in Action and other chapter activities. Members holding elected office at the chapter, regional, or international levels are ineligible for this award. Team leaders of committee chairpersons may be nominated for this award, if their leadership position is by appointment not election. A student may receive this award only once. A chapter may continue to nominate one outstanding member who has been very active, but has not served as an officer on the local, regional or international levels.

11. Tips For Advisor Award Entries Chapter Development Helped establish the chapter at the current college, or helped an existing chapter reach new levels of achievement. Spoke at Orientation/Induction Ceremony for eligible students. Conducted a chapter officer orientation and set goals each year. Attended chapter and officer meetings and assisted with events. Arranged for speakers at chapter events. Was an advocate for the chapter on campus and in the community.

12. Tips For Advisor Award Entries Development of Individual Chapter Members Assisted members in developing leadership skills and taking leadership roles. Worked with members on their All-USA Academic Team nomination and other scholarship applications. Wrote letters of recommendation for chapter officers and members. Mentored members for career and transfer opportunities.

13. Tips For Advisor Award Entries Phi Theta Kappa Programming Participated with members in: Honors in Action Projects based on the Honors Study Topic. Five Star Chapter Development Plan and a College Project. Is certified in the Leadership Development Studies Program. Helped chapter participate in the Honors Seminar Series.

14. Tips For Advisor Award Entries Regional & International Society Participation Attended Regional Meetings. Presented or served as a seminar leader at a Regional Meeting. Served as a Regional Advisory Board Member. Supported the chapter in hosting a Regional Meeting. Attended Annual Conventions. Presented at a pre-conference or educational forum at the Annual Convention. Attended International Honors Institute. Served as Faculty Scholar at the International Honors Institute. Served as an officer for the Society’s Association of Chapter Advisors or on the Board of Directors. Served on the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Committee or other Task Force. Supported member’s/the chapter’s candidacy for Regional or International Office.

15. The Paragon Awards for New Advisors Advisors with less than four years of service may be nominated for the Paragon Award. Years of service will be based upon the advisor’s start date reported to Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters. Award-winning advisors are those who make significant contributions to the growth of the individual members, serve as the chapter’s advocate on campus, and encourage the chapter to be involved on the local, regional and/or international level of the organization. An advisor may receive this award only once.

16. Distinguished Advisor Awards The criteria are the same as the Paragon Award with the exception that advisors must have served at least four years or more to be nominated for this award. Year’s of service will be based upon the advisor’s start date reported to Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters. An advisor may receive this award only once.

17. Continued Excellence Award for Advisors The criteria are the same as the Paragon and Distinguished Advisor Awards with the exception that advisors must have already received the Distinguished Advisor Award. Advisors are eligible for this award every other year.
