Slides from my talk for the #arlis2015 panel "Creating New Worlds: The Digital Humanities and the Future of Art Research Methodologies" sched.co/27gu Abstract: The ubiquity of image- and video- based social media platforms like InstaGram, Tumblr, and Vine give art history students an opportunity to engage dynamically with contemporary imagery in a live setting. This paper will describe how engaging critically with images in social media can provide valuable insights into audience response to contemporary and historical art, along with an ever-changing catalog of the contemporary gaze; as well as offering students exposure to concepts of metadata, text mining, information literacy, data visualization, and copyright and fair use.

Large-scale aggregations of digital collections from libraries, archives and museums offer users unprecedented access to cultural heritage materials. But they also have failed to incorporate important contextual information that allows users to develop an understanding of the significant features of purpose-built collections. This paper explores the development of information dashboard prototypes that provide users a high-level overview of cultural heritage collections. Two case studies using rapid-prototyping methodologies are presented.

Presented for Peer Council 2018 by Kalani Adolpho, Diversity Resident Librarian, UW-Madison College Library Libraries and archives are colonial impositions in many parts of the world, including lands that are now part of the United States Empire. As colonial impositions, libraries are complicit in the perpetuation of colonialism and Western hegemony through classification systems and controlled vocabularies. Through Library of Congress Subject Headings, Indigenous, queer, and gender non-conforming people are historicized, homogenized, and misnamed, and violence perpetuated against us is erased and/or referenced euphemistically. This session will define, name impact, and provide examples of colonialism in cataloguing and classification, as well as share information on alternative headings and organization systems developed by Indigenous peoples and nations. Additionally, there will be ample time for questions and discussion after the presentation.

Presented with Hillary AH Richardson (Humanities Librarian, Mississippi State University) in the ACRL-DHIG webinar, "Engaging the Digital Humanities: Collaborating throughout the Research Lifecycle," 23 March 2016. http://www.ala.org/acrl/researchlifecycle abstract: How does a group of graduate and undergraduate students, history faculty, and research librarians, who are not beholden to assignment deadlines, grades, or even degree requirements, form a project team for civil rights digital scholarship? Miriam Posner, esteemed digital humanist and blog writer, has written, “For me, community happens when people are genuinely invested in seeing each other succeed. This doesn’t happen by being nice to each other--although there’s nothing wrong with that, per se--but by recognizing and rewarding other people’s work” (2014, “Here and There,” miriamposner.com/blog/here-and-there-creating-dh-community/). This sentiment, combined with a collective passion for the subject matter, served as the glue that held together the team responsible for “‘A Shaky Truce’: Starkville Civil Rights Struggles, 1960-1980” (starkvillecivilrights.msstate.edu). This project, a digital history website, features oral history interviews from locals who share stories of desegregation and integration in Starkville, MS during the late 60s and early 70s. To contextualize these stories, the project used archives in the Mississippi State University (MSU) Libraries and donated personal collections to provide tools for researchers and teachers. The project team has spent just under 2 years (and counting) developing a site that bridges town-and-gown, and tells a unique story unlike the narrative of Civil Rights History that is normally taught in Mississippi or Civil Rights history classes. In this presentation, we plan to address a) the different stages of our project, b) DH skills needed, and c) collaboration within the library and externally in order to build “A Shaky Truce.” We will discuss how librarians were able to get buy-in from busy undergraduates, teaching and dissertating graduate students, and over-worked faculty (on sabbatical!) who had no previous experience with DH projects. Though not committed in a traditional sense (e.g. enrolled in a course with this as a final project, doing this research for a thesis, etc.), we were able to corral 11 people to conduct original research, try out various digital tools, and experiment with website design, effectively serving as project managers for this hodgepodge group of constituents. In addition to highlighting the digital tools for the site (e.g. WordPress, OHMS, TimelineJS), we will also discuss how we leveraged institutional and community resources to grow our project community beyond our university walls.

This presentation was given by Doug Holland and Trish Rose-Sandler at the Missouri Libraries Association conference held in St Louis MO in Oct 2013. There is a significant online literature and image repository called the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). Content from this repository has inspired a range of users to re-contextualize the BHL data in new, previously unimagined roles including: scientists creating visualizations of species names publishing; citizen scientists blogging about fascinating creatures; designers incorporating marine life into wedding invitations, artists creating collages of animal illustrations and nature photography ; and home decorators adding punch and wit to the walls of their kids bedrooms. Using the example of BHL and its open data principles, the presentation will discuss what open data is and how libraries can expand the impact and reach of their collections through open data methods.
