sector with varied resources and potentials.

3. Why Aquaculture ?
⢠Aquaculture is one of the most resource efficient ways to
produce protein.
⢠Aquaculture provides excellent opportunities for
employment and income generation, particularly in rural
areas.
⢠It also helps maximize the use of idle or marginal lands in
a number of developing countries where land is still the
basis of wealth and social status and thus, general well-
being.

4. Aquaculture Practice in India.
⢠In India, two types of aquaculture are practiced. These are
freshwater aquaculture and brackish water aquaculture.
⢠Freshwater aquaculture involves the breeding of
freshwater fish .
⢠Brackish water aquaculture involves breeding of fish that
habitat the sea.

5. Fish Production in India
⢠India is the second largest producer of fish and largest
producer of fresh water fish in the world.
⢠Fish production has increased from 41.5 lakhs tonnes
(1991-1992) to 101.6 (2014-15) lakhs tonnes.
⢠The Fish production is estimated to be 7.54 million tonnes
during the first two quarters of 2015-2016
