INTRODUCTION
Good day! For this lesson, you will gain knowledge about the tools that are used in embroidery and possess skills
in producing embroidery products. In order to do that, you need to prepare the tools that will be enumerated in
this lesson. Let’s find out first what you already know about this lesson by taking the Pre-assessment followed by
checking your answers.

Handicraft
This is a kind of craft where only hands and/or basic tools are used by individuals to make stuff or items that are
typically have an actual purpose.

One of the popular handmade products in the Philippines today are embroidered garments such as Jusi or Piña.
Jusi is a type of garment that is made of silk organza fabric and is the most widely used fine fabric for formal
Barongs and dresses. The Philippines’ original jusi fabric was made of banana leaf fibers but it was no longer
produced when the woven silks from China became the fabrics of choice in 1960’s. From that time, “Jusi” became
synonymous with silk organza from China. The other garment that is being used in making Barongs and other
dresses is the Piña fabric. This is made with great labor from fibers of special pineapple leaf. Below are examples
of Barong Tagalog made from those fabrics:
Embroidery is the ornamentation of textiles and other materials with needlework for personal use and decoration
not only at home but for offices as well. The term embroidery is an English word derived from the old French
embroiders meaning edge and border.
Embroidery work is best achieved if correct tools and materials are used. Tools refer to small or handy devices or
instruments used in sewing while materials or supplies are those that are consumed in finishing a product.
A. Tools Used in Embroidery
Gauge Used to measure short distances.
Tape Measure Used for measuring more than one-foot distance or materials
Thimbles Made from metal or plastic used to protect the middle finger and push the needle
while doing your embroidery article.
Scissors A small, sharp, and pointed that is use for trimming scallops, clipping threads, and
cutting large eyelets.
Embroidery Needle A short piece of steel having an eye on the other side and fine tip on the opposite
side.
Needle Threader This is used for easier threading.
Embroidery Hoops This is used to hold the fabric in place.
Pounce This is a fine powder used in transferring design by pricking method.
Pin cushion This is a place for pins and needles.
Tracing Paper This is used for tracing designs.
Sewing box This is used to keep together the embroidery tools and materials
B. Materials in Embroidery
Embroidery thread is a yarn made specifically for embroidery.
Types of embroidery:
• Crewel yarn – made from wool or wool-like acrylic and has two strands
• Embroidery floss – made from cotton or silk that has six strands of thread
Fabric sometimes referred to as cloth that are of great variety that differs in materials weight, weave, design,
color and finish.
Three types of Fabric
• Common weave – includes most tightly woven fabrics with a relatively smooth surface like linen, wool and
cotton. They are best used for articles with decorative stitches
• Even weave – they have the same number of stitches vertically and horizontally
• Basket weave – this is commonly used by beginners. It supplies guidelines for cross stitch and smocking
having an evenly spaced pattern like gingham cloth and polka dots
Before you proceed to the continuation of this lesson, prepare the following tools and materials that will
be needed for you to accomplish the task for this lesson.

□ Embroidery thread/yarn
□ Scissors
□ Pencil
□ Embroidery Hoops (optional)

DAY2
BASIC EMBROIDERY STITCHES
RUNNING STITCH
The thread runs straight along the
fabric, going up and down with
visible spacing between stitches on
each side of the fabric.
FRENCH KNOT
This stitch involves wrapping the
needle to form a knot on the surface
of the fabric.
BACKSTITCH
Similar to the running stitch, except
that the thread doubles back so that
there is no visible spacing between
stitches.
CHAIN STITCH
Forms a row of linked stitches that
really stands out.
SPLIT STITCH
The process for working split stitch is
similar to working backstitch, but
upside down.
LAZY DAISY STITCH
A chain stitch but goes from one
direction to another.
STEM STITCH
A basic stitch that's perfect for
creating smooth outlines.
FEATHER STITCH
A linked stitch that creates open lines
that almost look like they're moving.
SATIN STITCH
One of the most classic embroidery
stitches for filling an area is the basic
satin stitch. A series of straight
stitches worked next to each other.
SEED STITCH
Also called as rice grain stitch. Uses
simple straight stitches in a single
direction.

Now that you have learned the different basic embroidery stitches, use your knowledge about embroidery in doing
the following tasks:
