- I set out on my own unexpected journey, a phd, at a time when YL was undergoing changes in how counselling was occurring. They were exploring options in being in the contexts where young people meet, and I needed a site for studying change, and so a somehat fortuitous relationship was reforged. I had been in YL many years ago, took time out when my daughter was born, shes now 21!! And a youthliner herself. The journey YL has found itself on comes down very much to what we hold precious
- What is it that we hold precious?And how does whats in our pockets change this?If I invited you to empty your pockets or handbags, what would be there?
- Spotting the common denominator: Jan Chipchase has undertaken this project undertaken in many parts of the world, and what is found is that if a person owns a mobile ph they are likely to have it with them. And in nZ where mobile ph saturation is at 108%We have more mobile phones than people, and esp if u consider the very young and the very old are not using them. Also in NZ most contracts, and particularly contracts for young people is by prepay, which leads to particularmobile ph behaviours
- Despite media attentionwhat we hold close is not a weapon of mass destruction. There has not been an increase in developmental delays with young adults incapable of independenceFor most young people in nZ they receive a gift of a cell ph from a parent with the primary reason being given as increasing independence, particularly freedom of movement, and increasing safety.
- When we think we are taking on something and shaping it to our own ends, its also worth considering in what ways such devices are also shaping us.In the use of mobile technologies and particularly texting, these changes include how counselling, if it can still be called counselling, occurs not only where the client and counsellor never meet, but also where they are inaudible and invisible to each other. So invisible, inaudible, the parties never meet but its still counselling right? Sounding like a tui’s ad…moving right along

If a service such as yl did not exist, arguably organizations such as vodafone and telecom would have had to invent such service to stay inside of fair trading..

- Being able to see whats on the inside, as well as the outside, responding to the detail of whats immediately in front of usas well as whats underlying it and where it may go to in the future suggestsa need for both small and large picture thinkingFor if the underlying structures change around how young people communicate, then how people will be wanting to use the service will also change. If we taught bycc to the smallest capacity of counselling, of empowerment by text, can we then scale up if the service shiftsback to a verbal medium.How do we train people for uncertain futures?
- Meantime we have text counselling, and YL are worldleaders in this having been text counselling since Christmas 2004We learned from our clients what did not work for them, and they shaped us somewhat.Some of our findings appear counter intuitive - being inaudible and invisible allows voiceSome of those I talked with describe being able to say things they wouldn’t dream of saying, the fear of embarrased being too great. Another described writingher text was enough to stop her going round in circles retraumatising herself.
- In being invisible and inaudible cues are lost, you don’t know who your talking to, or even how many people are involved, and this plays both ways the clients don’t know more than one person may see and respond to a message either. The loss of paralinguistic cues of tone and pitch means cues we previously guessed at were even further masked: cues on sex, age and urgency are altered. More projecting happens in what is read into a message. Who hasn’t had a misinterpreted message in a texted conversation? At the same time it is also worth noting we have all been misinterpreted in other interactions also.
- The nuances of txt spk; ask, google, cheat sheets on wall, learn from those who have been texting emotional lives. Language is understood within contexts, there is a lot of forgiveness in txt, there is freedom for writing to be poorly constructed with social nuances omitted, messages tend to be abrupt. But I suggest match what you get language wise just as you would in a verbal interchange
- What I found on analysing some 6000 text messages is that interpersonal communication skills are able to be translated into this medium, The necessary and sufficient conditions identified by a founder of counselling, Carl Rogers can be identified in the traces of these conversations…

- Prank texts, the bane of the service, invisible and inaudible also has a dark side. How to manage the texts that test the service?Staying with the face value of messages, taking messages seriously, but also sensitively confronting where prior message conversations provide contrary informationBeing non judgmental as well as genuine … what skills are useful?
- While much is written of the dark side of text messaging, particularly bullying, little has been made known about the positives.It makes for sensationalist news reporting to demonize texting. To have it cast as bad, or pathologized as unhealthy, and to marginilize young people aho text as being similarly trivial or bad in associating themselves so heavilly with the medium. But just as it is nasty to get disparaging messages on your person, so too is it possible to have positive messages ‘at hand’. A dream catcher allows for good dreams to be caught while other dreams escape, similarly mobile phones are used as a talisman for good. I had a participant describe how she kept positive messages received from Youthline even 6 months later. Looking at them made her feel good, she found them affirming. just as I might keep one from my daughter saying love you, A mobile phones allows for a pocket full of affirmations
- Validity has been lent to texting in recent times particularly with disasters. Its no longer quite so maligned. At the same time it new technologies become strongly imbedded in our ways of being for better and for worse and it becomes imperative that we understand how we might shape such technologies for our own particular purposes.
