and life without any
communication.
• Whether sitting in office premises,
visiting a bank or shop or doctor or
any other public place, at home,
etc; everywhere we all exchange
information, thoughts in a way or
another on daily basis with different
people.
• This is a fundamental requirement
for the existence and survival of
human beings and organizations.
4. • Communication is a well-defined process of sharing different
information, ideas, feelings, etc. between two or a group of people.
• What is meant by a process?
Series of actions carried out in order
to achieve specific result
• The purpose of this process is to arrive at a common understanding.
• What is meant by sharing?
Two ways …Sending & receiving
• The information can be exchanged through
different verbal (spoken, written)
and non-verbal (body language) platforms.
• Communication is considered as the heart of personal, professional and
social life.
5. Is communication
tied to words only?
It includes:
▪ Behavior
▪ Gestures
▪ Dress
▪ Music
▪ Art
▪ Listening
6. •Only communicating a message to a person or to
a group is NOT enough. There should
be effective communication.
•If this person (receiver) understands and
interprets the message, in the way it was
intended (the desired response), then one can
say that communication is effective.
7. Definition of terms
Question 1: What is meant by communication?
Communication: is a Latin word “communis” which means ‘to
share’. Communication is the process of exchanging information from
one person to another with the use of the channel to create common
understanding.
Question 2: What we communicate?
It is the act of sharing of ideas, facts, opinions, thoughts, messages or
emotions, beliefs, values, behaviors
8. Question 3: What is meant by health communication?
Health Communication is the study and use
of communication strategies to inform and influence
individual and community decisions that enhance
health.
Using communication to improve the health and
well-being of population.
9. Question 4: Is communication is one way process?
• The communication process usually
comprises a two-way
communication which includes both
giving and receiving information and
signals between people.
• Once the given message of the sender is
received, understood by a receiver and
also sender’s desired feedback
(response) is sent by the receiver then
this communication process gets
completed. So, communication is a
circular process.
10. Most people think about speech when they think about communication but,
there are many other ways we can also use to communicate with each other.
• Facial expressions.
• Body Gestures.
• Pointing / Using hands.
• Writing.
• Drawing.
• Using equipment e.g. Text message or computer.
• Touch.
• Eye contact.
16. 1. Building rapport (Trust & Relationships):
• It helps to build stronger relationships
and mutual trust between people.
• A key thing to note is that
communication is not a one-way
process. That is, while speaking is an
essential component of communication,
active listening is also an vital one.
• So, if you wish to build stronger
relationships with people, don’t
just talk to them, but also listen to what
they’re saying.
18. Behaviors that are particularly helpful in building rapport
1. Use open body language: If you are
sitting, then lean towards the person
you are talking to, with hands open
and arms and legs uncrossed. This
will help you and the person you are
talking to feel more relaxed.
2. Look at the other person for
approximately 60% of the time. Give
plenty of eye-contact but be careful
not to make them feel uncomfortable.
3. When listening, nod and make
encouraging sounds and hand
gestures.
4. Smile
5. Use the person’s name early in
the conversation. This is not only
seen as polite but will also
reinforce the name in your mind so
you are less likely to forget it
6. Try to ask the other person open
questions . These questions are
more comfortable to answer,
because you are not being put on
the spot to give a clear opinion
19. Behaviors that are particularly helpful in building rapport
7. Use feedback to summarize,
reflect and clarify back to the other
person what have said. This gives
opportunity for any
misunderstandings to be rectified
quickly.
8. Find links between common
ground (experiences & interests).
9. Try to show empathy.
Demonstrate that you can
understand how the other person
feels and can see things from their
point of view
10. Build on the other person’s ideas
(follow the lead)
11. Be genuine (respect), with visual
and verbal behaviors working
together to maximize the impact
of your communication.
20. the ability to step into someone else’s shoes
Rapport Building Skills

• Communication is a skill that is highly
appreciated and sought after in all
fields of life.
• Effective communication skills are
given primary importance while
selecting job and college applicants.
• Not only this, but simply being more
effective communicators makes it
easier to seek out opportunities
yourself, and to grab an opportunity
when it presents itself.
22. 3. Develops Your Personality:
• Communication helps to build and
enhance your personality and self.
• This is because, through
communication, you are better able to
navigate the world and exploring new
and challenging situations.
• You also meet new people, many of
whom might have different opinions,
views, and experiences. This makes
you grow as a person, and discover
who you truly are.
23. 4. Helps Solve Conflicts:
• Communication is the best way to solve any
conflict that might arise in your life or
relationships.
• Not only this, but in most cases, communication is
an excellent way to avoid any conflict from arising
from the start.
• Communication also helps gain better knowledge
and understanding of another person, be
empathetic, respecting differences.
• Effective communication also helps avoid any
misunderstanding and to quickly solve any that
might arise.
24. 5. Helps Express Your Ideas & Personal Needs:
• Communication helps clearly to tell
others what you want, and express
any ideas you might wish to share
with them (ie get to the point).
• Example: if you have a very good
idea about how you can level up the
trip, you’re going to be taking with
your friends tomorrow. Well, you
can’t very well do anything about it
until you actually tell your friends
about it, right?
25. 6. Makes You Stand Out from The Crowd:
• There are many things that set a leader
apart, however, communication is
definitely one of the most important
skills that you require in your life to
become a leader.
• Think of every great leader from
history, and you’ll most likely end up
discovering that they were great
communicators.
26. Question: Why leaders require good communication skills?
Answer
As a leader, by
communicating effectively,
you and your staff will be
able to share ideas and
experiences and have the
same understanding about
various issues. In this way
you will be able to solve any
confusion and differences.
27. 7. Helps Improve Decision Making:
▪ Not every decision that people take will lead to
the desired outcome. Sometimes, our decisions
might lead to an undesired outcome as well.
▪ One way of reducing the chances of our decisions
leading to undesired–sometimes even negative
outcomes–is through developing our
communication skills.
▪ This is because, when you communicate
effectively, you receive more and quality
information. This ultimately leads to the quality of
your decision-making.
