delicate arch
Many of us can thinkbackon beachside memoriesof playingarchitectandtryingtobuildthe perfect
sand castle onlytowatch that sandfall to the shore, knockeddownbywindand water.
But civiliansandscientistsalikehave lookedatnatural landformsmade fromsandlike the Delicate
Arch or the Double Archin Utah’sArchesNational Parkand wonderedjusthow thatsandmanaged
to formsomethingsomassive anddurable.
While manyresearchershave arguedthatstressplacedonsedimentsbygravitycanaddto natural
weathering,astudypublishedSundayinNature Geoscienceisthe firsttouse numerical modelsand
3. physical experimentstoprovide amechanismthatexplainshow increasedstressstabilizessediment
ina waythat allowsitto morphintothe awe-inspiring,resilientstructureswe see today.
Pickingthe BuildingBlocks
In orderto studythe mechanismsbehindthe formationof these structures, researchersselected
twodifferenttypesof sedimentmaterials. The firstwasasolidsandstone thathadto be cut witha
water-cooleddiamondsaw.The sandstone isastrongmaterial because itreliesoncementation
cohesion—particlessticktogetherbecause of sheercompactionandpressure.
The secondmaterial wasa type of sand(referredtoasSLS) and reliesnotoncementation, buton
fabricinterlocking.Essentially,thissand’sstructural strengthcomesfromthe waythe individual
grainssit ontop of,or nextto, one another.(Rememberthatbitforlater.) Thissandisso delicate
that someone couldcause adry clumpof it to crumble bysimplygrazingitwitha paintbrush.
WhittlingAway
Once theyhad theirmaterialsinplace, the teamtooksamplesof eachsedimentand cuttheminto
variousshapes,like cylindersandcubes,totry andcreate differentlandformationsbyexposing
themto simulationsmimickingthe typesof erosionthatoccur innature.
Researcherscreatedsituationsthatreplicatedthe effectsof bothrainand flowingwater,andsalt
and frost.SLS samplesthatweren’texposedtoanypressure orloadstressfell apartinaboutfive to
sevenminutes,whenrainorflowingwaterwasinvolved.However,those samplesthatwere bearing
a load andunderpressure reachedageometricallystable shape afterabout60 minutesof exposure
to the flow,leavingaround70percentof the cube volume behindandintact.
Whensaltor frostconditionswere thrownintothe mix,the teamusedsamplesof cemented
sandstonesthatwere unconfined,orwithoutanyload-bearingpressure.These unconfinedchunksof
sandstone crumbledapartfourtimesfasterthanthe samplesof cementedsandstonesthatwere
underpressure.These pressurizedcubeseventuallydevelopedintothin,hourglass-like columns,
much like manyof the structureswe see innature.
Explainingthe Mechanism
4. The team foundthat, inorder forthese sedimentstoactuallyformthe gloriousconfigurationswe
see inour national parks, the fabricof the particles(orthe waytheyfittogether) hastobe undera
certainamountof pressure.Whenthere isn’tenoughstressonthe particlesof the samples,theywill
simplydisintegrate intoindividual grains.Andwhile mostof the sample will keepdisintegrating
whenit’sunderincreasingpressure,there comesapointwhenthe pressure reachesacritical value
and the grainsdon’tdisintegrate.The teamcoinedthe conceptthatexplainsthisseeming
contradictionthe “locusof fabricinstability.”Essentially,anythingnotunderenoughpressure is
unstable andwill erode away.
Now,the nexttime youhappenacrossone of these natural wonders, youwon’thave tospendyour
time puzzlingoverhowitisall of those little grainsof sandcan sticktogetherenoughtomake
somethingso impressive.Justknowit’sall inthe fabric.
