A genre is basically the category of any type of art or literature, for example
categories of movie would be comedy, horror, thriller etc.

2. Codes and Conventions
Most of the time thriller movies focus on mainly editing. Editing in thrillers tend to be fast paced followed by
quick cuts. This creates tension and suspense within the audience. Tension is very stereotypical when it comes
to a thriller. Thrillers also like to use the colour black and white as a convention, it brings a more dark and
menacing feeling to the movie. Mirrors and stairs are used often in thriller movies as a convention, it is used in
mainly psychological thrillers. This all relates to the iconography of thrillers such as darkness, and narrowed
spaces, bars on windows and street lamps.
Thrillers also use lots of surprises and cliff-hangers to create suspense, tension and excite for the audiences
pleasure. They also use non-believable events that are out of this world, examples are using creatures such as
aliens, monster etc. Or by using geological events that destroy the world. Camera movements are sped up to
add much more tension as the audience will have to keep their eye on the speed and view what's happening.
3. The “Villain” can also turn into a good person sometime throughout the movie. For example,
they can realise the chaos they are creating and help with what they have destroyed, or maybe
help the protagonist in the end.
Using effects such as narrative trajectory, bounded world and timescape. Narrative trajectory is
when the main character has a willingness to live, they will do anything to save a loved one or
a large group of people etc. Bounded world is when the main character cant get help from the
outside world as they have been either betrayed or it will have no means. Timescape is when
the main character doesn’t have a lot of time to achieve his/her goal and needs to race against
time.
