Right
Maintaining Patient’s Rights to receive
relevant information and participate in
care process
Objective
 To fulfill the ethical commitment of HMG to patients
and community.
 To respect patients rights to participate in their care
process.
Definition
Are those authorized by the conscious, mentally sound adult
patient to receive information about his/her health status and to
participate in his/her care decision.
In case patient is unconscious, infant, or mentally retarded, or
not adult
father, mother, adult son and daughters, adult brother and
sister.
Husband, wife.
Grandfather.
Sponsor, Guardian, court
Once the provisional diagnosis is reached/ confirmed or
before admission
The conscious patient or significant others have the right
to know
 nature of illness and initial diagnosis and patient’s
condition.
 proposed care or treatment plan.
 the identity of the physicians who will be involved in the
treatment care plan
 potential benefits.
 expected complication with possibility of surgery if
needed.
 Possible alternatives and expected percentage of
success.
 expected the length of admission, cost of treatment.
The Treating Doctor Responsibility
 all mentioned above.
 treated doctor shall ensure that all of the above
informed and understood by the patients or the next kin .
 Patient Relations Department must informed to
reassure that all of the above are understood correctly in
case there was lack of communication .
 documentation in patient teaching record .
In case patient refuse the treatment, treated doctor must
inform the patient / significant others, about the
consequences and the responsibilities of the decision
taken.
 discharge medical advice must be signed by all and
kept in the patient file (DAMA).
 in case Patient or the Guardian is
welling to seek for second opinion
from inside or outside the hospital
The concern staff should
respond appropriately to requests of a
second consultation for opinion if
necessary
All Clinical Staff Responsibility
 Allow patient and their families to fully participate in
decisions about their care, treatment , and services.
 Patients shall be informed about their diagnosis,
options for care, treatment and services in simple words
(Layman’s Term), and how they can participate .
 supporting and urging the patients to discus the
treatment plan with the physician who will answer all
questions in understood way.
 respecting the preferences and choices of the patients.
 all involving staff should work as union to achieve the
optimum target of the treatment care plan.
 respect the patient believes and protect the patient
privacy all the time
The patient shall
identify his/her
designee and
decision maker upon
admission .
Patients Services Responsibility
Patients shall be informed of their responsibilities by a
“Patient Information Handbook” which include and not
limited to :
 Patients' Rights and Responsibilities.
 Visiting Hours.
 No Smoking Policy.
 Use of electrical appliances.
 Home Medication.
 Safety of Belongings.
The hospital leaders shall
provide the emergency medical
care in the emergency
department for all life
threatening cases based on
Saudi MOH Policy regardless of
their ability to pay in the private
hospitals

should involve the patient, the patient's
designee or the patient's family as
appropriate, to assist the patient in making
informed decisions about treatment offered,
by giving them accurate and honest
information .

Managing Patient & Family Rights and Responsibilities

  • 1. Patient & Family Right Maintaining Patient’s Rights to receive relevant information and participate in care process
  • 2. Objective  To fulfill the ethical commitment of HMG to patients and community.  To respect patients rights to participate in their care process.
  • 3. Definition Are those authorized by the conscious, mentally sound adult patient to receive information about his/her health status and to participate in his/her care decision. In case patient is unconscious, infant, or mentally retarded, or not adult father, mother, adult son and daughters, adult brother and sister. Husband, wife. Grandfather. Sponsor, Guardian, court
  • 4. Once the provisional diagnosis is reached/ confirmed or before admission The conscious patient or significant others have the right to know  nature of illness and initial diagnosis and patient’s condition.  proposed care or treatment plan.  the identity of the physicians who will be involved in the treatment care plan  potential benefits.  expected complication with possibility of surgery if needed.  Possible alternatives and expected percentage of success.  expected the length of admission, cost of treatment.
  • 5. The Treating Doctor Responsibility  all mentioned above.  treated doctor shall ensure that all of the above informed and understood by the patients or the next kin .  Patient Relations Department must informed to reassure that all of the above are understood correctly in case there was lack of communication .  documentation in patient teaching record . In case patient refuse the treatment, treated doctor must inform the patient / significant others, about the consequences and the responsibilities of the decision taken.  discharge medical advice must be signed by all and kept in the patient file (DAMA).
  • 6.  in case Patient or the Guardian is welling to seek for second opinion from inside or outside the hospital The concern staff should respond appropriately to requests of a second consultation for opinion if necessary
  • 7. All Clinical Staff Responsibility  Allow patient and their families to fully participate in decisions about their care, treatment , and services.  Patients shall be informed about their diagnosis, options for care, treatment and services in simple words (Layman’s Term), and how they can participate .  supporting and urging the patients to discus the treatment plan with the physician who will answer all questions in understood way.  respecting the preferences and choices of the patients.  all involving staff should work as union to achieve the optimum target of the treatment care plan.  respect the patient believes and protect the patient privacy all the time
  • 8. The patient shall identify his/her designee and decision maker upon admission .
  • 9. Patients Services Responsibility Patients shall be informed of their responsibilities by a “Patient Information Handbook” which include and not limited to :  Patients' Rights and Responsibilities.  Visiting Hours.  No Smoking Policy.  Use of electrical appliances.  Home Medication.  Safety of Belongings.
  • 10. The hospital leaders shall provide the emergency medical care in the emergency department for all life threatening cases based on Saudi MOH Policy regardless of their ability to pay in the private hospitals
  • 11. Summary – HMG Policy (HMG/RYN/PFR/003)  It is the policy of Dr. Sulaiman Al-Habib Hospital that all Physicians and nurses should involve the patient, the patient's designee or the patient's family as appropriate, to assist the patient in making informed decisions about treatment offered, by giving them accurate and honest information . as long as to promote the patient’s right to participate in
