“The  Color Purple”A contrast of the book and movie By Amy Harris
Alice Walker In 1982 The Color Purple was written by Alice Walker as a novel. Alice Walker received the American Book Award and a Pulitzer Price for fiction :  The Color Purple. It was one of the first recognized books dealing with black women living in poor circumstances and being abused by men.
Quincy Jones Quincy Jones was entitled to be the executive producer of  The Color Purple
Steven Spielberg Steven Spielberg was hired to direct The Color Purple This decision caused a lot of controversy as he was a white man of Jewish origin plus the fact that Alice Walker did not know him
Menno Meyjes Menno Meyjes, was hired to write the end of the script because of Ms.Walker suffering from Lyme disease Coming from Holland where people spoke folk were looked down on by those who spoke standard Dutch could relate to the problems explained in Walker’s novel.
Whoopi Goldberg Whoopi Goldberg  Played “Celie”
“Celie" The main character of the book In the book Celie talks to God about her problems. The book allows Celie to first tell and share her feelings and problems with God later on with her sister Nettie by writing letters. In the movie Celie’s life is shown without any hurt or violence. But, in the book she feels hurt by the fact that Shug loves Albert.
Danny Glover Danny Glover Plays Albert/Mister
“Albert”/ “Mister” The end of the movie is focused more on Albert than Celie In the movie Albert is incapable of fixing Shug’s Breakfast In the novel Mister is mean and cold to Celie, humanized only by the love for Shug and his son Harpo
Margaret Avery Margaret Avery Plays “Shug Avery”
“Shug Avery” In the movie Albert shows no violence after Shug arrival, whereas the book does. In the movie Shug and Celie becomes good friends ; whereas in the book they have an affair. Shug also runs away a marry a young man in the book, but in the movie it’s an older man.
Oprah Winfrey Oprah Winfrey Plays “Sophia”
“Sophia” In the movie Sophia is potrayed as a strong woman whom speaks her mind and takes control of things. Her power is taken away from her when she has to be Mrs. Millie maid.
AkosuaBusia AkosuaBusia Plays “Nettie”
“Nettie” In the movie Nettie comes to live with Mister and Celie. While living with the two she teaches Celie to read. In the movie she later movies to Africa and is united with Celie children.
 Willard E. Pugh Willard Pugh Plays “Harpo”
“Harpo” Harpo was Mister son. Harpo was married to Sophia and wanted to control her.
Conclusion The main reason that the movie was written was fact that many black people are illiterate and therefore are not capable of reading. The movie depicts Celie’s story in a different way than the book does and leaves out essential themes.
