Testing is contextual and methods & tools we adopt to perform testing is to add value to the product used by the consumers or the enterprise.

From your own experience it might not come as a surprise that most of today’s testing is unhelpful, filled with unnecessary paper work and folkloric activities. For some reason testing work often does not seem to be very helpful in projects. That is definitely a problem. If you are a tester, your manager might ask you for metrics that don’t make sense to you. And since you are a smart person, you have probably once in a while gamed the system. All that is certainly damaging to the industry. What can you do? This session brings you insight into Complexity Thinking with Dave Snowden’s Cynefin model and ties that to your job as a software tester. It offers you a way to look at software testing from a complexity thinking standpoint of view and gives you tools to argue your case if you are exposed to dysfunctional project settings. In addition to that, we will have some fun with idiotic metrics and to lighten up the serious topic we’ll engage in hilariously entertaining real life examples of bad metrics. To round it up, we’ll propose more meaningful alternatives.

For most ecommerce companies, software is not the final deliverable product. It is a research tool, to determine what customers will pay for. To be able to get good data from software, monitoring and analytics must be built into the system. Alerting must come from business requirements and be based on application generated data. In the traditional operations world, we monitor what is easy, and avoid monitoring that which is difficult. This talk is an attempt to show people that monitoring must be driven by metrics from the CxO office, and then potentially involve technical metrics if needed. This talk explains why functional and business level monitoring is crucial. We also cover the tradeoffs from a DTAP model to continuous deployment. There will be a brief introduction to a couple of useful monitoring tools for functional monitoring. No special technical skills are expected of the audience, but having a general overview of the monitoring world is a good thing. This talk is not limited to ecommerce companies, but is most applicable to that environment.

Many Geeks underestimate the power of collaboration and all of the skills they need to become experts in their craft. They have heard of "Agile" and sometimes do something that smells like it. Software development is about managing complex problems over some period of time to produce something that serves people: the end users, the stakeholders, our colleagues, and ourselves. Getting better at it - becoming an expert - is not just about obtaining and applying knowledge. We will discuss why Agility, in its deepest form, contributes to the growth of Expertise and the service of people.

Shazam has been growing very fast recently. A lot of this growth happened in the engineering department at London HQ where our mobile apps are being developed. This talk will go into technicalities of project management techniques we use to keep 100+ MAU a month happy while maintain agility and respond to rapidly changing market situation. We will talk about data driven Kanban, flow, visual standups, changing requirements and structure of our teams. We will show what metrics we care about, how we measure them and what we do with the results. You should expect some observations about development of state of art apps useful from product/project manager’s and developer’s perspective.

All agile development begins with the sales process. Internally, adopting agile approaches require the support of top management and project managers. External clients have to be sold on the agile approach and convinced to sign a contract that allow for agile development. Sales teams have to be able to convince external clients that the agile approach is the best for their project. Paul Klipp has been selling the agile process internally and to outside clients since 2004 with considerable success. In this presentation, he'll discuss how to sell the benefits of agile development to internal stakeholders and to outside clients and will provide an overview of different approaches to agile contracts.

Consistently delivering and maintaining well performing applications doesn't just happen, it requires a solid architecture, sound development, continual attention, diligence and expertise. It also requires appropriate testing, not simply of release-candidate builds, but of designs, units, integrations, and physical components... both during development and in production. The question is, how can a team accomplish all of that under all of today's pressure to deliver quickly and cheaply? Join Scott Barber for this Keynote Address to hear about what successful organizations are doing to consistently deliver well performing applications, to learn the underlying principles and practices that enable those organizations to create, test, and maintain those well performing applications without breaking either the budget or the schedule, and what the key items are that virtually every team can implement right away, to dramatically improve the consistency and overall performance of their applications.

Some people seem to think that following an Agile process will get you good software. The reality is that Software Craftsmanship is found in the work produced, not the process followed. The Agile Manifesto hints at this, but many have missed it. How do you get that quality up there, consistently keep it there, and keep raising the bar? Through a combination of some discussion on the nature of Skills Acquisition, and an analysis of common practices in software development (from Tests to Pull Requests to Pair Programming), we’ll paint a picture of how to look at how the key concepts of Agile Software Development, the makeup of your team, and the nature of your delivery goals should affect each other to build good software. There is a difference between producing a "consumable app" and producing a "software asset" and the relationship between expertise and agility is crucial to understand, especially for the latter.
