1. EXPLAIN HOW YOUR VIDEO FITS
INTO GOODWINS THEORY
The video I have chosen is a song by Nas called “I Can”
which belongs to the genre R&B/Rap. The music my
coursework group will use is also R&B/RAP, so the genre
characteristics will be similar to what we use for our music
video.

2. Relationship: Lyrics + Visuals
“Like, I met a woman who's
becoming a star
She was very beautiful”- When Nas
sings these lyrics, a shot of this
young girl is shown to resemble the
“beautiful star”. The lyrics to the
video do not match consistently with
the visuals, but do show some
relationship between the both.
In this shot Nas is holding his nose as
he is acting upon the lyrics he is
singing at the time.
“When she reaches for hugs people
hold they breath”...
3. Relationship: Music + Visuals
There is no dance routine in this video,
however the children actors and the
artist Nas himself move their heads to
the beat of the song, which shows the
clear relationship between the music
and the visuals.
Also due to the song having a slow
beat compared to the other Hip
Hop/Rap songs, this video includes
slow motion shots of movement to
reflect on the beat/tempo of the song.
This also emphasises on the
relationship between the music and the
visuals.
4. Close-Ups
There are various close up shots of Nas’s
face, this compliments the voyeuristic nature
of the features that are found in rap videos.
The effect of the shots reflects the typical
conventions of a rap video. This also links
with voyeurism as it makes the viewers feel
closer to the artist.
5. Voyeurism-Notion of
looking
As this video is based around an artist based
performance, it hardly consists any voyeuristic
shots, whereby images of any private activity
is shown. These are the shots I have found
from the video that may relate to voyeurism as
they look quite secretive.
