3. Why study the Media? The media can influence almost every part of your life as a student The media is ubiquitous and unavoidable in contemporary society, it is all around us As students in a modern world, you bring your own experiences of the media to the subject
4. A few more reasons to study the Media … The economic, social and cultural importance of the media is there for all to see. The media: Generates employment and profit Provides us with information about political processes Offers us ideas, images and representations that shape our view of reality Influences our social lives: arguably, the media has replaced traditional institutions such as the family, the church and the school
5. In essence, the Media is something that must be studied to be fully appreciated and understood. So, what will you be studying?

Media Studies : AS Units The following units will be taken in your first year: Induction Unit: Basics of theory and practical work Production Portfolio: Practical work creating a music magazine, working with Desktop Publishing Exam Units: Representations of gender, age and ethnicity in television drama The production, marketing and distribution of video games
7. Media Studies: A2 Units The second year will consist of: Advanced Practical Production on Viral Marketing. You will create a marketing campaign for a new film, producing a website design and new film trailer Exam Unit: Analysis of the Representation of ‘British’ in film and television. This will focus on both traditional and contemporary texts
8. Entry requirements: A Level Media Grade C or above in either GCSE English or Media Studies. IT skills are essential for practical work
9. A-Level in Film Studies The perfect companion to Media Studies AS/A Level The course takes a predominately academic and theoretical perspective, with some opportunity for practical work to consolidate understanding Practical tasks will be inspired by the great directors of cinematic history
10. Film Studies: AS Units Students will become familiar with the ‘language of film’, focusing on the construction of works of cinema and the impact upon the audience. Assessment is in the form of an essay and a practical task: shooting and editing a short film sequence Exam Unit: Comparing the representation of crime in British and American Cinema
11. Film Studies: A2 units Students will have the opportunity to produce a research project, focusing on a film of their choice Exam Units: Exploration of urban conflict in World Cinema The emotional impact of film and cinema Critical perspective study of a film chosen by the exam board
12. Entry requirements: Film Studies Students should either have a Grade B in English Literature or Grade B in Media Studies at GCSE Level An interest in film is highly recommended
13. OCR Nation Level 2 Media This is a one year course we offer as part of our Media education at Ely The course is made up of 6 units At the end of the course you will gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction The qualifications are designed to recognise candidates' skills, knowledge and understanding of the media sector. Suitable for pre- and post-16 candidates, they provide a high quality, industry-recognised qualification.
