2. Quoted speech refers to reproducing words
exactly as they were originally spoken.
Quotation marks (“…”) are used.
Quoted speech is also called direct speech.
Reported speech is also called indirect
speech.
3. There are three ways to make
preferable
quotation of speech. Please you may

4. Quoting one sentence Explanation
a. She said, “My brother is a
student.”
In (a) use a comma after she said.
Capitalized the first word of the
quoted sentence. Put the final
quotation marks outside of the period
at the end of sentence.
b. “My brother is a student,” she
said.
In (b) use a comma, not a period, at
the end of the quoted sentence when
it precedes she said.
Quoting more than one Explanation
c. “My brother is a student. He is
attending a university,” she said.
In (c) quotation marks are placed at
the beginning and end of the complete
quote. Notice: there are no quotation
marks after student.
Quoting a question or an exclamation Explanation
d. She asked, “When will you be
here?”
f. “When will you be here?” she
asked.
g. She said, “Watch out!”
In (e) the question mark is inside the
quotation mark
In (f) if a question mark is used, no
comma is used before she asked.
In (g) the exclamation point is inside
the quotation marks.
5. Reported speech refers to using a noun
clause
to report what someone has said. No
quotation
marks are used.

everyday.
b. She said, “I am watching TV.” She said she was watching TV.
c. She said, “I have watched TV.” She said she had watched TV
d. She said, “I watched TV.” She said she had watched TV
e. She said, “I will watch TV.” She said she would watch TV
f. She said, “I am going to watch TV.” She said she was going to watch TV
g. She said, “I should study hard.” She said that she should study hard
h. She said, “Watch TV.” She told me to watch TV
i. She said, “Do you watch TV?” She asked me whether I watched TV
There some reported verbs that can be used to express
quoted speech, such as: stated, say (said), told, asked, order,
commanded, etc.
