Gatekeeping refers to the process by which various individuals and groups determine what news or information is allowed to pass through and be broadcast. There are multiple "gates" or decision points in the news process, from the initial story idea to its inclusion in a news broadcast. At each gate, an individual gatekeeper such as a journalist, editor, or news director decides whether a story is newsworthy and moves on to the next stage based on standard news values and other considerations like audience and competing stories. In the end, only a small fraction of the total potential news and information makes it through all the gates to actual broadcast.
