HISTORY OF MAC
 The Macintosh project began in the late 1970s with Jeff Ruskin, an Apple employee
who envisioned an easy-to-use, low-cost computer for the average consumer. He
wanted to name the computer after his favorite type of apple, the McIntosh.
 Steve Jobs requested a release of the name so that Apple could use it, but was denied,
forcing Apple to eventually buy the rights to use the name. The development of Mac
began in 1979.
 The development team of Mac included Ruskin, Atkinson and Smith, George Crow,
Chris Espinosa, Joanna Hoffman, Bruce Horn, Susan Kare, Andy Herzfeld,
Guy Kawasaki, Daniel Kottke and Jerry Manock
 Smith's first Macintosh board was built to Ruskin's design specifications: it had 64
kilobytes (kB) of RAM, 25MB Hard drive used the Motorola 6809E microprocessor,
and was capable of supporting a 256×256-pixel black-and-white bitmap display.
 By December 1980 Apple succeeded in increasing speed from 5Mhz to 8Mhz and
RAM (Random access memory) from 128 KB to 256 KB and made sure that they
increased the pixel quality from 384×256 CRT display.
 Then finally the pixel capacity was increased to512x342 monochrome display which
performed exceeding their expectations.
INTRODUCTION TO APPLE’S MAC
 The Macintosh marketed as Mac, is a line of personal computers (PCs)
designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. It is targeted mainly at
the home, education, and creative professional markets, and includes the
descendants of the original iMac.
 Production of the Mac is based on a vertical integration model.
 Apple facilitates all aspects of its hardware and creates its own operating
system that is pre-installed on all Mac computers
 Apple exclusively produces Mac hardware, choosing internal systems,
designs, and depending on the investment made they decide the prices.
 So far the costliest laptop released by apple’s is Macbook Pro Air.
 Apple manufactures device with all self financed components except for
graphic cards where it uses some third party components such as graphic
subsystems of NVIDIA, Geforce , INTEL and also AMD Sempron.
DECILNE OF MAC
 The Apple’s Mac ruled the world of
computers till 1990, carried the fame all
over the world though they were priced
very high.
 IN 1990 Microsoft released a new
Operating platform which is very less
expensive when compared to apple’s Mac,
and also the Operating system released by
apple was not as user friendly as
Microsoft's Windows 3.0.
 Then apple released exclusively a range of
Macs in October 1990 to stay In market,
and invested a lot on advertising their
products.
 But Microsoft's series of windows
completely dominated and took over the
market in early 1990’s.
 As a result there was a kind of tug of war
between Apple and Microsoft.
REVIVAL OF MAC
 In 1998, Apple introduced its new iMac which, like the original
128K Mac, was an all-in-one computer. Its translucent plastic
case, originally Bondi blue and later various additional colors,
is considered an industrial design landmark of the late 1990s.
 This device also provided a CD ROM reader for installing
software replacing the floppy drive.
 The only problem was the device was incapable of writing
media to other CD ROM’S as this was explained by apple as to
stop piracy of the software.
 The iMac proved to be phenomenally successful, with 800,000 units
sold in 139 days ,by which the annual profit reached
toUS$309 million, Apple's first profitable year since Michael
Spindler took over as CEO in 1995 .
 By September more than 140000 pre orders were placed which
proved to be huge success and by end of October, the product proved
to be a huge hit in the worldwide market, and regained the control
over the market.
 Thus the Mac revived and survived and continued to rule the market.
Features of the today’s MACMAC
 The current Mac product family uses Intel x86-64
processors. All current Mac models ship with at least 2 GB
of RAM as standard.
 Current Mac computers use ATI Radeon or NVIDIA
Geforce graphics cards as well as Intel graphics built into
the main CPU.
 All current Macs (except for the Macbook Air, Mac Mini,
and Macbook Pro with Retina Display) ship with an
optical media drive that includes a dual-function DVD/CD
burner. Apple refers to this as a SuperDrive.
 Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air, and Mac Mini
computers now also feature the "Thunderbolt" port,
which Apple says can transfer data at speeds up to 10
gigabits per second.
 Starting with the then-new iMac G5, released in October
2005, Apple started to include built-in iSight cameras on
appropriate models, and a media center interface
called Front Row that can be operated by an Apple
Remote or keyboard for accessing media stored on the
computer.
ADVANTAGES OF MACINTOSH
 The specifications of the Mac definitely prove how fast it is, and there is no
need to check the speed using some software.
 Almost all the Macbooks are now provided with a camera which can be used
for video calling or for Skype.
 The USB ports are available which support speeds up to 10giga bits per
second and as a result the data transfer takes place within seconds.
 Each and every Macbook is provided is WIFI certified and net can accessed to
perfection.
 Apple uses HyperCard and MultiFinder by which multitasking comes into
existence.
 Mac OS continued to evolve up to version 9.2.2, including the addition of a nano
kernel and support for Multiprocessing Services 2.0 in Mac OS 8.6.
 Initially MAC was developed in the Pascal programming language, it was
substantially rewritten in C++ for System 7. From its beginnings on an 8 MHz
machine with 128 KB of RAM, it had grown to support Apple's latest 1 GHz G4-
equipped Macs.
DISADVANTAGES of MACINTOSH
 THE Mac OS is quite popular in the western nations and not very much
popular in the Asian countries and only 27% of the people use Mac.
 Microsoft’s windows supports a wide range of formats for playing videos,
music but in case of Apple’s Mac doesn’t support as many as Windows
does.
 The Mac OS is so expensive even now that a common man cannot
afford it.
 In the world nearly 62% of the people use Microsoft’s windows and
remaining 38% use Mac OS, as a result the exchange of data becomes
difficult as the two Operating systems have different format of
executable files.
 If the Mac OS is met with some software malfunctioning, it is difficult to
troubleshoot as it is not very user friendly.
 The Mac Os requires professional users for its full fledged use.
CONCLUSION
 MACINTOSH OR MAC IS AN OPERATING
SYSTEM WHICH IS TO BE OPERATED BY
A PROFESSIONAL USER IF NOT THE
AMATEUR’S REPORT PROBLEMS.
 THERE IS A NEED TO PROVIDE STUDY
ON HOW TO USE MAC OS; AS IT CAN
MAKE AN AMATEUR TRANSFORM IN TO
A PROFESSIONAL.
 THE BASE FOR THE MAC OS IS C++ , IF A
PERSON IS FAMILIAR WITH THE
KNOWLEDGE OF C++,THEN HE/SHE CAN
CREATE APPS FOR MAC OS AS THEY
ALWAYS FALL SHORT OF APPS AND
RESOURCES.
 SO THE FUTURE OF THE COMPUTER
SCIENCE ENGINEERING STUDENTS LIES
IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE APPS OF
MACINTOSH, IF HE IS INTRESTED IN
MAC OS.
