Welcome
Handsworth Primary School
Why Kingswood?
At Kingswood this is what we do:
• Inquisitive minds are encouraged to celebrate change.
• Creative risk taking is always promoted and challenges tackled head on.
• Confidence is built, resilience developed and self-esteem boosted along the way.
Imagine a place where young people are inspired to learn and grow;
where challenges are faced, skills learnt, minds opened and potential
nurtured everyday.
With 30 years’ experience we know what works and we are proud to
deliver immersive learning at it’s very best.
Why Kingswood?
• We fully support the Learning Outside the Classroom Agenda and are a member of the Council for Learning Outside the
Classroom (CLOtC).
• We offer accelerated learning by doing and the ultimate adventure activity experience.
• We develop the life skills young people will need to explore, experience and make sense of their world.
• We believe every young person has the capacity to achieve great things and we are here to help, encourage and
inspire along the way.
• We provide a safe and secure ‘home from home’ environment for every visitor and offer complete peace of mind for
parents too.
Inspired learning
Enhancing an education: There is no better way to educate young people than by engaging, inspiring and exciting
their minds.
Skills to succeed in life: At Kingswood we focus on the personal development of every student, teaching important
life-skills, challenging ideas and building confidence and self-belief.
An unforgettable experience: Time spent at Kingswood can prove a truly life-changing experience for many
young people.
The Kingswood Experience
• Increasing confidence in themselves and their own abilities
• Developing new friendships and strengthening existing ones
• Trying new activities and igniting interest in new hobbies
• Experiencing the camaraderie of an overnight stay and an experience shared
• Development of a healthy sense of self awareness and empathy for others and their environment
• Increasing concentration, listening skills and attention span
• Greater respect for those – both teachers and peers alike – who have shared the same journey
• Accepting challenges and overcoming fears
Young people get so much more out of a visit to Kingswood than just
having a lot of fun. The benefits gained are immense, and most will
develop new life-skills without even realising they’re learning.
It’s all in a day
A typical day at Kingswood runs as follows:
• Breakfast between 7.30am and 9am
• First activities kick off around 9.30am
• 15 minute juice break
• Lunch between 12pm and 2pm
• A full afternoon of activities
• 5 minute juice break
• Evening Meal between 5.30 and 7pm
• The Social Sundown evening entertainment at 8pm
• Return to dorms
The school will choose their preferred activities prior to the trip and the centre will then create a programme to meet
all of their specific objectives, needs and learning outcomes.
• 6 sessions per day plus one final evening session.
• Group sizes of no more than 15 plus a fully qualified Kingswood instructor and a teacher.
• Students encouraged and praised during activities but are NEVER forced to take part if they are not comfortable
doing so.
While other schools may also be present on centre during your stay, all programmes and activities are conducted
separately. Groups will have the opportunity to mix during The Social Sundown.
• All residential accommodation comfortable and 100% secure.
• Teachers rooms are located close by to allow for plenty of close supervision.
• All bedding is provided on centre - one of the very first tasks for all students is making up their own beds!
Just as at school, Kingswood cannot guarantee 100% safety for personal items brought onto centre and they will not be
covered by insurance. It is therefore advisable to leave valuables – cameras, mobiles, iPods, MP3 players, computer
games, jewellery - at home.
Home away from home
It’s important for students to maintain high energy levels throughout their
stay, so 3 freshly-prepared, healthy cafeteria-style meals are served in our
communal dining area every day.
A varied choice is always offered, with both hot and cold meals, a salad bar, at least one vegetarian option.
Plenty of juice and water is available at all times.
Dietary requirements can be catered for as long as we are told in advance - forms will be issued prior to your visit for this
purpose and to establish any medical needs.
Food glorious food!
We know how nerve-wracking it can be letting your child go on a
residential visit, so we do everything we can to make it a safe and
enjoyable experience for all.
Our policies and procedures are designed to make sure we
adhere to the highest safety standards at all times:
• Continual safety and first aid training for all staff
• Regular checks on equipment before and after every
activity session
• Qualified First-Aider on centre 24/7
All Kingswood staff are fully CRB checked and are trained
to take responsibility for the well-being of the children in
their care. We have found the best way to help children
cope with being away from home is to keep them busy,
having fun from dawn ‘til dusk.
We create a warm, supportive environment for students so
they quickly feel at home and our activities are progressive,
allowing students to join in at whatever level they’re
comfortable with.

At Kingswood this is what we do.   With our educationally based philosophy and a focus on providing lifelong learning and invaluable experiences, every one of our enthusiastic, highly trained team is passionate about connecting with young people and helping them to become the very best that they can be. • Inquisitive minds are encouraged to celebrate change. • Creative risk taking is always promoted and challenges tackled head on. • Confidence is built, resilience developed and self-esteem boosted along the way.   At Kingswood we create an enriching Learning Outside of the Classroom experience that not only supports young peoples ‘formal’ education, it complements their lives and helps them grow as individuals too.

Inspired learning What is Kingswood all about?   Enhancing an education: There is no better way to educate young people than by engaging, inspiring and exciting their minds.   So at Kingswood we take the teaching outside of the classroom environment, creating a safe and nurturing setting in which students can explore new possibilities, push the boundaries and discover just how much it’s possible for them to achieve.   Skills to succeed in life: At Kingswood we focus on the personal development of every student, teaching important life-skills, challenging ideas and building confidence and self-belief.   By encouraging resilience, teamwork and a greater sense of respect for themselves, others and their environment, young people are better able to adopt a positive mental attitude to life and change – something which will help them to become a valuable member of society and to succeed both at school and throughout their chosen careers.   An unforgettable experience: Time spent at Kingswood can prove a truly life-changing experience for many young people.   It encourages a wonderful sense of community and camaraderie, bringing together nationalities and cultures from all around the world, building new friendships and creating wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.
  6. The Kingswood Experience Young people get so much more out of a visit to Kingswood than just having a lot of fun. The benefits gained are immense, and most will develop new life-skills without even realising they’re learning. • Increasing confidence in themselves and their own abilities • Developing new friendships and strengthening existing ones • Trying new activities and igniting interest in new hobbies • Experiencing the camaraderie of an overnight stay and an experience shared • Development of a healthy sense of self awareness and empathy for others and their environment • Increasing concentration, listening skills and attention span • Greater respect for those – both teachers and peers alike – who have shared the same journey • Accepting challenges and overcoming fears
  7. It’s all in a day   A typical day at Kingswood runs as follows:   • Breakfast between 7.30am and 9am • First activities kick off around 9.30am • 15 minute juice break • Lunch between 12pm and 2pm • A full afternoon of activities • 5 minute juice break • Evening Meal between 5.30 and 7pm • The Social Sundown evening entertainment at 8pm • Return to dorms at 9.30pm • Lights out by 10.15pm   The school will choose their preferred activities prior to the trip and the centre will then create a programme to meet all of their specific objectives, needs and learning outcomes. • 6 sessions per day (4 at Dearne Valley) plus one final evening session. • Group sizes of no more than 15 (12 at Colomendy and Dearne Valley) plus a fully qualified Kingswood instructor and a teacher. • Students encouraged and praised during activities but are NEVER forced to take part if they are not comfortable doing so.   A total of 6 sessions of activities (each lasting 1hr 10mins) will take place each day (4 activities for Dearne Valley), plus one final session. To ensure the safety off all taking part, students will be split into groups of no more than 15, all of which are led by a fully qualified Kingswood instructor and a teacher. This brings groups sizes well within LEA guidelines of 1 to 10.   As it is important to build confidence and self-belief, all students are given plenty of encouragement and praise during activities - they are NEVER forced to take part if they are not comfortable in doing so.   While other schools may also be present on centre during your stay, all programmes and activities are conducted separately. Groups will have the opportunity to mix during The Social Sundown.
  8. Home away from home   • All residential dormitories are warm, comfortable and 100% secure. • Girls and boys sleep in completely separate areas and teachers rooms are located close by to allow for plenty of close supervision. • All bedding is provided on centre - one of the very first tasks for all students is making up their own beds! • Separate showers and toilet facilities are available for girls and boys. Depending on individual centres, some rooms come with en-suite facilities.   Just as at school, Kingswood cannot guarantee 100% safety for personal items brought onto centre and they will not be covered by insurance. It is therefore advisable to leave valuables – cameras, mobiles, i-pods, MP3 players, computer games, jewellery - at home. A clearly named disposable camera is acceptable.
  9. Food glorious food!   It’s important for students to maintain high energy levels throughout their stay, so 3 freshly-prepared, healthy cafeteria-style meals are served in our communal dining area every day.   A varied choice is always offered, with both hot and cold meals, a salad bar, at least one vegetarian option and yes, sometimes even chips!   Plenty of juice and water is available at all times.   Most dietary requirements can be catered for as long as we are told in advance - forms will be issued to the school prior to your visit for this purpose and to establish any medical needs.
  10. Safety & Wellbeing   We know how nerve-wracking it can be letting your child go on a residential visit, so we do everything we can to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Our policies and procedures are designed to make sure we adhere to the highest safety standards at all times: • Continual safety and first aid training for all staff • Regular checks on equipment before and after every activity session • Qualified First-Aider on centre 24/7 All Kingswood staff are fully CRB checked and are trained to take responsibility for the well-being of the children in their care. We have found the best way to help children cope with being away from home is to keep them busy, having fun from dawn ‘til dusk. We create a warm, supportive environment for students so they quickly feel at home and our activities are progressive, allowing students to join in at whatever level they’re comfortable with.
