2. FAMOUS ROCKS AT RED ROCKS
Creation Rock Ship Rock Stage Rock
Red Rocks Amphitheater has three primary rock structures in its immediate
vicinity. The rock behind the stage allows for great acoustics and a unique
backdrop. It's a mix of nature, fun, and the result of millenia old geological
processes.

3. GEOLOGICAL PROCESS
Accurate details of the creation of the
Rocky Mountains are yet to be
discovered. The building of
mountains so far inland is unusual in
the normal geologic processes, but
yet the Rocky Mountains exist. One
theory claims that the subduction
zone angle was too shallow causing
inland mounting building.
A fountain formation was the result of
the fluvial processes that made the
sandstones at Red Rocks.

4. EROSION AND WEATHERING
Jointing and weathering
have caused rocks to
separate from the original
rock structure. When
moisture enters a space,
and the temperature
changes, rocks can
separate. This causes
rock fall like the example
in the picture. In addition
to frost wedging, plants
have rooted into the rock
causing more separation.

5. FLUVIAL PROCESSES
 The fountain formation that the Red
Rocks Amphitheater were the result of
a fluvial process called alluvial fans.
It is deposits shaped like a fan where
streams level off, reduce speed and
spread onto a more level plain.

6. SUMMARY
 The site of the Red Rocks Amphitheater was just another site in the mountains until it was renovated
into an accosting and scenic wonder. The process, usual or not, that developed this amazing site
with its natural beauty and acoustics is not known to all but through the course of this project and
this course, I definitely have a greater appreciation for the structures around me. The creation,
erosion, and destructive forces that act upon the Earth are nothing short of natural and intriguing.

