In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
Question 1
USE
• One common convention present in
music videos is the fast paced editing.
We have used this convention to match
the tempo of the song.
• If a music video has slow editing it
makes the product quite tedious.
• The pace of our editing makes the piece
flow really well. The main parts of the
music video in which this was effective is
at the start when our female character is
getting ready and towards the end when
there is a car crash.
• Our performer in the piece was
me, and I was also one of the
characters in the narrative side
of the video.
• The reason for this is it helps
connect the song and its lyrics
to the narrative as it enhances
the characters relationship with
the song.
• Another convention we adopted in our
piece is the mixture of narrative and
performance.
DEVELOP
• One typical convention used in music videos is the use of
close ups.
• Close ups are common in music videos as there is no
diegetic sound to show a characters emotion, so this has to
be displayed using just camera shots.
• Main evidence of this in our piece is during the
performance side of the video when our character is
emotionless.
• This reinforces Todorov’s theory of equilibrium, disruption,
resolution, restored order and new equilibrium.
• Music videos always tell a story that is
relatable to the audience, or something that is
completely random
• We based our story on a relatable situation to
our target audience, a very conventional
relationship story
• We developed this by mixing the performance
with the narrative, as stated before which
helped tell the story through the whole video.
CHALLENGE
• One common convention in music videos is the
gender stereotype of masculinity and femininity.
Males are seen to be strong and females weak.
• We have challenged this stereotype in our piece
as we represented the male character as very
unstable emotionally. For example, the
performance side showed our character as sad
and emotionless and also in our narrative we see
him making gestures that show his sadness.
• Another convention we challenged was the
performance.
• In the rock genre of music, during performance
sides of the video you often see the whole band
performing.
• We challenged this
because we had just
me miming in front of
a blank canvas with a
filtered light, rather
than having a band
performing in a
musical performance
scene.
