2. Draft 1: Parody
The title of the soap opera is made up of the soaps’
logo. This will secure the brand identity of the soap.
The font is bold and three dimensional which connotes
that the programme Is bold new idea. The title also has
a gradient on it. This connotes that the tone of the
narrative promises to change as the story develops.
This is key as many soaps are always changing to fit the
audiences needs depending on the time.
The tagline ‘a cake-astrophe’ is a light
hearted pun, merging the theme of
bakery in the trailer and the verbal
code ‘catastrophe’ which connotes a
terrible event unfolding. This tagline
is effective as it fits the parody nature
of the poster and yet keeps the
sinister themes that are in the
narrative of the series.
The synergy with social media is an
important part of the presentation of
the programme as it engages with the
audience’s need for a ‘personal
relationship’ (Katz) with the producers
of the programme. This allows them to
express their opinions on the issues or
points made in the narrative.
The point of call information is
positioned on the cake, this makes it
more interesting as it integrates with
the images on the poster. This also
makes the whole poster more subtle
without being so subtle that no one
notices the important information.
3. Draft 2: Sinister
The logo is used to
assert the familiar
brand identity that is
seen in the trailer.
This is also utilized
through the use of
the ‘Walton Hill’ cake.
The Tagline is in the centre of the
logo. This connotes that it is a
central issue to the story. The
verbal code “Seeing is deceiving.”
connotes that not all that is seen
in the trailer is as it seems. This
creates an air of mystery and goes
far to create the sinister
atmosphere.
The Images are of the main characters that
are seen in the trailer. They will be facing
each other with suspicious looks. This also
creates suspicion as the audience try to
figure out the characters suspicions. Their
positions on the edge on the cake and
overlapping the text signifies (De Saussure)
that the characters relationships will be the
overriding theme of the narrative.
The point of call
information is positioned
on the cake. This makes it
more interesting more
likely to noticed which is
critical as the audience will
not know when to watch it
without this information.
