2. CORCORAN FITNESS 1. Educated and experienced fitness professionals. Due to increases in the number of organizations offering health and fitness certifications, it’s important that consumers choose professionals certified through programs that are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, such as those offered by ACSM. www.corcoranfitness.com A certification is only the examination which one must pass in order to be considered competent. There is currently no standard for personal training that accredits anything more than an examination. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) was created in 1987 by NOCA (The National Organization for Competency Assurance) to help ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the public through the accreditation of a variety of certification programs/organizations that assess professional competence. Any personal training certification worth having or taking will be listed on the NCCA website under accredited programs: http://www.noca.org/NCCAAccreditation/AccreditedCertificationPrograms/tabid/120/Default.aspx . Any certification not listed, is not an accredited certification. Of these there are hundreds if not thousands available on the Internet and the individuals creating them do not necessarily have any background or expertise.

With childhood obesity growing at an alarming rate, health and fitness professionals see the epidemic as an opportunity to create programs tailored to overweight and obese children. Solving the problem of childhood obesity will have an impact on the health care industry today and for years to come. www.corcoranfitness.com Recent data from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association indicate that rates of childhood (pre-pubertal) overweight and obesity are dramatically on the rise reaching at or above 30 percent in 30 states. The U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona, MD called it “the greatest threat to public health today killing more Americans than AIDS, all cancers and all accidents combined.”

Distinct from strength training, core training specifically emphasizes conditioning of the middle-body muscles, including the pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen – all of which provide needed support for the spine.
8. CORCORAN FITNESS 7. Exercise and weight loss. In addition to nutrition, exercise is a key component of a proper weight loss program.
