As new learning skills emerge it is necessary for teachers to develop sufficient capacity to develop learning programs that will provide the opportunity for students to develop these critical learning skills. ‘Learning and Literacy for the future: Building capacity Part 2’ by June Wall and Karen Bonanno, published in Scan, Volume 33, Issue 4 in 2014 considers a capacity building approach, through formal and information professional learning experiences, to ensure teachers develop competencies and capacity to help improve learning outcomes and prepare students for the rapidly changing world of work. A capacity building tool is outlined and explained as a development tool for teachers to develop capabilities for future learning. Reflection and strategic visioning, that includes the development of a personal professional learning plan, is an integral component of the tool and will also be explained in this presentation.

With the best of intentions, people have flocked to behaviour-driven development by way of Cucumber over the past few years, and that’s a great thing! But just like dieting, where great things can fall to the wayside due to the temptation to indulge in wonderful desserts, BDD can fall to the wayside due to the pressure to deliver more and more functionality, sprint after sprint. Often, Cucumber becomes just a way to automate a bunch of tests, which isn’t bad by itself, even if it doesn’t get to the core of how product owners and the delivery team should start to communicate. But without constant attention, that great garden of creeping Cucumber vines becomes a tangled mess that slowly withers away under massive technical debt. In this session, Howard will guide you through 12 of the most important issues to tackle in your garden of executable requirements. He will discuss and explore topics ranging from the easy to comprehend (such as imperative versus declarative style) to the difficult to deliver (such as how to keep Gherkin-driven Selenium WebDriver tests working dependably through the use of advanced ExpectedCondition techniques). By the end of the session, you should have plenty to indulge in on a healthy diet of BDD!

Long before the Agile revolution for software development began, industry had learned that efficient production of goods required intense attention to quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement. These themes of Lean Manufacturing (which was further refined into the Toyota Production System) were never part of the original formulation of the Agile Manifesto, and are rarely mentioned as part of the traditional Agile/Scrum recipe for teams transforming to the new “Agile” mindset. The reality is that the traditional Agile/Scrum recipe is actually a “dumbed down” version of the Toyota Production System, and makes it easier for organisations to grasp and start from. However, if organisations really want to achieve the goal of producing the software they need in a fashion that leads to High Performance Teams and Sustainable Engineering, they will need to understand the principles of Lean so they can incorporate them into their unique process. This session teaches the basics of Lean, and demonstrates how they apply to Agile development.

Week 5 Discussion 1 More Website Sharing and Feedback This discussion provides a second opportunity to share your website. Again, sharing your website for feedback provides you with perspectives on your design and content to consider for enhancing your website before you finalize it during Week Six. To prepare for this discussion, construct a mission statement and add it to the homepage of your website. To construct your mission statement, consider the models you reviewed during the Week Four assessments and the tips for writing an effective mission statement from Education World (Links to an external site.). Next, update your working definition of at-risk. Then, be sure you have created pages for and linked to your Week Three Child Maltreatment Brochure and the Week Four School-Based Efforts: A Plan to Support At-Risk Youth assignment. Finally, if you have not already, adjust your website’s design using the feedback from peers and the instructor received during Week Three. Initial Post: Create an initial post that includes a link to your website and addresses the following: a. Describe the inspiration behind the design of your own mission statement. b. Discuss the changes made to your working definition of at-risk and how you believe the changes improved upon your original draft. If you made no changes, explain why not. c. Explain where and how you made revisions to any artifacts and/or the design of your website based on the feedback previously received from peers or your instructor’s evaluation of the work. d. Introduce peers to the Child Maltreatment Brochure you developed during Week Three by briefly describing what you learned about the topic and about designing an effective brochure while creating it. Discuss any challenges associated with designing the brochure as well as what you like best about your creation. e. Introduce peers to the School-Based Efforts: A Plan to Support At-Risk Youth assignment you developed in Week Four. Briefly discuss some of the most important concepts learned while researching and preparing this assignment. What do you like best about this creation or the process of creating it? f. Describe what you like so far about the process of gradually adding to your website and sharing so as to participate in reciprocal feedback. Week Five Instructor Guidance Welcome to Week Five of EDU644: Child and Family Welfare! Please be sure to review the Week Five homepage for this course to see the specific learning outcomes for the week, the schedule overview, the required and recommended resources for the week, an introduction to the week, and a listing of the assessments for the week. Next, be sure to read this entire Instructor Guidance page. Overview Week Five will be a vital week of learning because you will be refining the topic of groups at-risk and selecting a specific at risk group for which to “specialize” in for your website. By now, you have formed preliminary ideas of the patterns and themes emerging in yo ...

Week 6 Discussion 2 Los Pen Profile the kind of empirical evidence at Los Pen that supports the school’s transformation. Focus on quantitative data. Based on the statistical data gleaned from the readings what qualitative conclusions would you draw about the efficacy of the many aspects of differentiated parent support? INSTRUCTOR GUIDANCE WEEK FIVE *Special thanks to Dr. Patrice Jones for sharing her original guidance in this document. In Week Five, you read about the link between Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and parental involvement. When students do not have their basic needs met or do not feel safe in school, they are not fully prepared for academic instruction. “It is imperative that we proactively create a climate that will support all students learning” (Hjalmarson, 2011, p.135). Partnerships are all about connection. In this final week of the class, we will end our discussion about the need to develop partnerships among schools, families, and communities to support student success. Parents are the glue that helps to bring students and schools together. For schools, it is important to gain parent support and involvement in assisting students in their educational growth. Schools must develop strategies to offer parents in establishing better support for students in their educational journey; however, in order for schools to help parents, there must be a plan in place. We learned at the start of this course that there are a variety of ways in which parents can be supportive of students in school. Far gone are the days when the only way that parents could show support was to help with homework. Although helping with homework is still vital, it is only a small example of the many strategies that parents can use to support the education of their children. Think about the classroom today, beyond fundraisers and PTA meetings. What are some of ways in which your child's school has asked for your support or you have asked parents for support? How does this extend to using technology as a means of academic support? Consider the technology you use to communicate with your child’s teachers or with the parents of your students. Research shows a strong correlation between the achievement gap and home Internet accessibility (Empowering Parents, 2010). “If, as President Obama emphasizes, parents have a responsibility to be actively involved in their children’s education, they will need the technology tools and skills to do so effectively” (The Children’s Partnership, 2010, p. 7). Having regular communication with schools through email, blogs, and social media helps parents receive updates to their child’s performance and plan for what additional supports they might need for areas of need. We have learned throughout the previous weeks of this course that classrooms throughout the U.S. have become increasingly diverse. Hjalmarson writes that, “when people are born into families with limited parenting skills, without some intervention or tr ...

Issuing Warnings Write a paper that identifies a disaster and discuss the various warning systems that could be used to notify the public and provide instructions. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of each type of warning system. Your well-written paper should be 3-4 pages in length and formatted Collaborating With Families 8 David Young-Wolff/Photographer’s Choice/Getty Images Pre-Test 1. Once the enrollment process is complete, communication between administrators and families takes place only if there is a problem or an emergency. T/F 2. Families may initially learn about a program through a website, but need to visit the program in person to make a decision about whether to enroll. T/F 3. Administrators should let the teachers handle all communication between school and family, including the administrator in a conversation only if there is a serious problem. T/F 4. Family support services, such as referrals to a food pantry, should be offered at every parent meeting. T/F 5. The specific words early childhood professionals use to talk with families are not important as long as they are spoken with warmth and kindness. T/F Answers can be found at the end of the chapter. Learning Objectives After reading this chapter, you should be able to: 1. Explain how collaboration with families benefits children, families, and programs. 2. Identify strategies for successful collaboration with families, and explain the administrator’s role in implementing the strategies. 3. Summarize the ways programs communicate with families during the enrollment process, and explain how these experiences influence the quality of the relationships that follow after the child is enrolled. 4. List strategies for ongoing communication with currently enrolled families, both informal and formal. 5. Compare and contrast three models of parent participation: parent education, family support, and parent involvement. 6. Explain the importance of staff training on the topic of working with families, and summarize the administrator’s role in supporting professional development in this area. 7. Describe the unique challenges and stresses that parents of children with special needs face, and describe the administrator’s role in ensuring that staff members develop collaborative relationships with this group of families. 8.
