• Capturing Video to Use in Blackboard
• Creating a YouTube Mashup
• Creating a ShareStream Mashup
• Using Video Everywhere in Blackboard

3. VIDEO ENGAGES AND INFORMS
Videos can tell a story in a way that text and photos cannot.
Video can explain visually in 30 seconds, what text and images may take
an hour to explain.
Learning by watching is a key learning method.
Our brains processes visual information 60,000 times faster than words,
and one minute of video is considered equivalent to around 1.8 million
words
Video is a great method for presenting new content and walking step-by-
step through a process.

Welcome to the Level 3 Webinar! Thank you for joining. My name is Tom Okon, and I’m one of the instructional designers at the Instructional Technology Lab at UIC. I’ll be leading the webinar today, but joining me in the chat room is Shefali, our Teaching asisitant, who will be answering any of your questions through the webinar. Just put a message in the Chat window and Shefali or I will try to answer your question.
Today’s objectives are all centered around what we consider to be higher level tools that you can use to enhance teaching and learning. All the tools help you use video in different ways. Finding ways to use video for instruction is a passion of mine, having been a video editor and camearman in another carreer
What we will talk about today is: [go over the bullet points]
So first a little about video and why you might want to use it more to communicate with students. Some of you may know this already which is why you are on this webinar.
(Read One,two three) I think we are all aware of the first three, the fourth-(Read it) is something I just recently came across. And the last of course makes sense, Demonstrating or modeling a process on video ussually has more impact then words alone.
At UIC we have to main ways of adding Pre-Made video into Blackboard, premade is of course a video clip that was produced by someone other then yourself. Both Youtube and ShareStream video’s can be brought into Blackboard by using a Mashup. That’s Blackboards term for combining multimedia elements with other content.
You are most likely familiar with YouTube Video’s, they are becoming more and more popular to help your average person learn how to do just about anything. People post video’s on using software, cooking and even “How to Break Dance”.
You may not have heard of ShareStream. ShareStream is a video streaming service that UIC pays for, that enables someone to more easily post video’s online that play back reliably all the time. Video that you own that is not uploaded to YouTube. We discuss it’s use here in conjunction with Blackboard, but it also can be used to post video’s on a website. We get into a little more detail later.
The other type of video you can add to your course is one you create yourself.. Blackboard has a little known feature called Video Everywhere where you can put yourself on Camera and speak to your students. Your image and voice are recorded and the video is automatically uploaded to YouTube, as an Unlisted video, that will not come up in any search. You just click on the Record from Webcam tool in any content area.
The other way to create your own video is to use a piece of software called Echo 360 Personal Capture. It is software you download to your PC that lets you record whats on your computer screen and yourself on Camera. Its free software provided by ITL that’s available for your use. Ill give you more specific instructions later.
So these are your options for adding video to your course site. (Read Points) Adding PreMade video or creating your own.
Now lets go in to more specifics for adding pre made video using a Mashup. Mashups are a great way to introduce multimedia on your Blackboard site. It’s quick and easy.
For example, you can encourage discussion about a classic play. Create a mashup that links to a YouTube video of a scene from the play and a link to a newspaper review of that production. (read Slides.
Thank you so much again for attending. You will receive a PDF of this webinar as well as a link to the recording. As always: please join us again!
