2. What role does the camerawoman play
throughout the production?
The cameraman’s role is a vital role, just as any other role in the
entire production is. The cameraperson is to ensure that the
director’s needs are met throughout all filming sessions.
The role of the cameraman is to ensure that the vision the
director is brought to life and whilst working with the actors,
ensure they are comfortable. The camerawoman must also
ensure that she is comfortable with the camera so she is ready
for filming before we actually start.
The cameraman must also correctly capture and manage all
footage that the director wishes to have. The cameraman must
also be in constant communication with the director and the
editor to see if the shots are okay or if the shots need to be
refilmed
3. Why did I decide to take on the role?
Not only do I enjoy directing, I enjoy physically being
involved. I enjoy having a sense of power when I have
control over taking the ideas from my head and
making it a reality.
Having never worked as a cameraman before for a
previous production, this production has made me
gain valuable experience. I feel confident with
actually taking part in filming and general
cinematography.
4. What did the role involve?
It involved bringing to life the directors visions and
physically being involved with the cinematography. I
was responsible for operating the camera,
maintaining composition throughout filming sessions
as a lot of the shots were hand-held and also I was
responsible for maintaining camera angles. I was
responsible for making creative decision in order to
make the production the best it could be possibly be
and making all camera work looking as professional
as possible.
5. Did I encounter any problems whilst fulfilling
the role?
At times the camera would casually go out of focus at
crucial times during the shoot. As I was
unexperienced, this dilemma was really hard to solve
at first but then I got used to it and everything was
better.
During one filming session, the camera that was
given to me had too much exposure so that only
white was showing on the camera. After
experimenting with some buttons, the exposure was
fixed.
6. What has taking on this role taught me?
This role has allowed me to have a great
understanding of exactly what it takes to be a part of
the film making process. It has allowed me to gain
qualities that I will always require in life such as
communication skills, how to work independently.I
was able to become much more familiar with the
necessary equipment and even how to use them. The
most important qualities that I feel I have gained is
definitely being able not to rely on other people –
this is a skill that will always be needed in life.
