of a NATION!
State replaces Church!
Napoleon spread revolutionary ideas through
conquest!
For decades following the revolution, the French
government changed frequently from Republic to
Monarchy, with intermittent periods of violence and
civil war.
Other European powers made alliances to balance the
power of Europe and keep stability (no more
revolutions).

5.  Only completely successful slave revolt in world history
 Most whites fled or were killed
 Private/State lands redistributed-Nation of small-scale




farmers producing mostly for their own needs (contrast
with former plantation economy)
Destructive internal divisions of race/color/class
Poverty/Authoritarian politics
Inspired other slave rebellions-temporary expansion of
slavery elsewhere
In Latin America-deep caution and social conservativism
in independence movement leaders

6.  Political/Social: Tended to be undemocratic (military junta)
 Continued battles between liberals, conservatives and the
military over how to best rule. Unstable.
 Tensions between articulate political forces and the separate
masses.
 Economic:
 Unable to free itself from dependence on Western-controlled
economic patterns.
 Dependent on foreign tech and investment
 Cultural/intelligent: Colonial relationship still existed
 Distinct cultural entity
 combination of Western styles and values plus its racial diversity,
colonial past, and social structure of a semi-colonial economy.
