2. WHAT IS DEMOCRACY ?
Democracy is a form of
government in which all eligible
citizens participate equally—
either directly or indirectly
through elected
representatives—in the
proposal, development, and
creation of laws.
It encompasses social, religious,
cultural, ethnic and racial
equality, justice, and liberty.
Democracy contrasts with forms
of government where power is
either held by an individual, as
in a monarchy, or where power
is held by a small number of
individuals, as in an oligarchy
3. Karl Popper defined
democracy in contrast
to dictatorship or tyranny,
thus focusing on
opportunities for the people
to control their leaders and to
oust them without the need
for a revolution.
One form of democracy
is direct democracy, in which
all eligible citizens have
direct and active
participation in the political
decision making.
4. In most modern democracies, the
whole body of all eligible
citizens remain the sovereign
power but political power is
exercised indirectly through
elected representatives; this is
called representative
democracy or democratic
republic.
The concept of representative
democracy arose largely from
ideas and institutions that
developed during the European
Middle Ages, the Reformation,
the Age of Enlightenment, and
the American and French
Revolutions.
5. MAJOR FEATURES OF DEMOCRACY
In a democracy the final
decision making power must
rest with those who are elected
by the people.
A democracy must be based on
a free & fair elections where
those currently in power have
a fair chance of losing.
In a democracy, each adult
citizen must have one vote &
each vote must have one value.
A democratic government rules
within sets by constitutional
law & citizens’ right.
6. NON-DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES
Why Mexico , Saudi Arabia, Estonia, Fiji &
Zimbabwe are non democratic countries ?
Let us find out
7. MEXICO
Since its independence in
1930, Mexico holds elections
after every six years to elect
its president.
But until 2000 all election
was won by a party called
PRI.
Opposition parties did
contest the elections but
never win the election.
PRI used many tricks to win
the election.
Teachers of government
schools forced parents to vote
PRI.
8. Media ignored the
activities of opposition
parties except to criticize
them.
PRI spent a large sum of
money in the campaign
for its candidates.
Considering all the above
points we can say that
the Mexico lacks the
feature of free & fair
elections due to which
it is non-democratic
country.
9. SAUDI ARABIA/ESTONIA/FIJI
In Saudi Arabia, women do not have the right to vote.
Estonia has made its citizenship rules in such a way
that people belonging to Russian minority find it
difficult to get the right to vote.
In Fiji, the electoral system is such that the vote of
indigenous Fiji has more value than that of Indian-Fiji.
The above points show that these countries lack the
feature of one person, one vote & one value. So these
countries are also non-democratic.

11. ACCOUNTABLE FORM OF GOVERNMENT
Democracy is better than any other form of
government because it represents to the needs
of the people. It does not depend on the whims
of the dictator. In simple words, we can say
that democracy is for the people. It is an
accountable form of government.
12. IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF DECISION MAKING
Democracy is based on consultation and
discussion as such many mistakes are corrected
in time. Thus democracy improves the quality of
decision making.
13. KEEPS THE COUNTRY UNITED
Democracy provides peaceful solutions to every
problem. It provides the best method of dealing
with differences and conflicts. It suits the needs of
many countries like India with diversity of
languages, religions, castes and creeds.
Discussions lead to solution of every problem so
it keeps our country united.
14. ENHANCES THE DIGNITY OF EVERY CITIZEN
Democracy is based on political equality which
ensures equal rights both for the rich and the
poor , the educated and the uneducated. Thus in a
way, democracy enhances the dignity of every
citizen.
