Making Inferences
Inference
• Take what you know and make a
  guess!
• Draw personal meaning from text
  (words) or pictures.
• You use clues to come to your own
  conclusion.
Make an Inference!

• What does this image tells you?
Ask yourself these
        question…
• What clues can I use?
  – Picture or written
    clues?

• What did I already
  know that helped me
  make that inference?
Try this!
Questions…

• Did you use picture
  or written clues?

• What did you
  already know that
  helped you make
  that inference?
Try this!

              “…and the
               ants kept
            carrying them
              away, until
            they were all
             gone. That’s
                 what I
               thought.”
Questions…

• Did the written clues “…and
help you to make a the ants
  better guess? kept
                           carrying
                             them
                             away,
• What did you already until they
know that helped you were all
                             gone.
  make that inference? That’s
                             what I
                          thought.”
How Do Good Readers
      Make Inferences?
They use:

1. Word/text clues
2. Picture clues
3. ASK themselves questions!
4. Use what they already know
Try this!
Miss White has recess duty. Jacob
finds a frog, picks it up, and runs
over to show it to Miss White. Miss
White screams, jumps, and runs as
fast as she can into the school.
Miss White has recess duty. Jacob finds a
frog, picks it up, and runs over to show it to
Miss White. Miss White screams, jumps, and
runs as fast as she can into the school.
What I Read + What I already know = What I can infer
Miss White + Teachers have = Miss White is a
 Has recess recess duty teacher
 duty.

Miss White + Some people are = Miss White is afraid
screams and afraid of frogs. of frogs.
 runs as fast as
 she can when she
 saw the frog.
Try this again!

Oh I had a balloon.
It was round, it was red.
Such a lovely balloon,
Almost as big as my head.
But I heard a loud noise,
And I looked around to see.
For I wondered just what,
Made that loud noise at me.
Oh I had a balloon.
It was round, it was red.
                    Such a lovely balloon,
Almost as big as my head.
But I heard a loud noise,
And I looked around to see.
                    For I wondered just what,
Made that loud noise at me.

What I Read + What I already know = What I can infer
The character + Children likes balloon = The character may
has a balloon be a child

The character + Balloon can burst = The character’s
heard a loud balloon burst
noise
The End
