1. Before We Go (2014)
After watching this film trailer I found myself moved by the connection between
the two characters. I thought the pace that the trailer went at the amount of
information revealed about the storyline and the characters was just enough to
make the trailer interesting but not give to much away. One of the things that I will
take from this film trailer and try and include in the film trailer that I will make is
the chemistry between the two main characters. This is because if I want to make
the audience believe the storyline so I need to ensure that the actors that I use
have a connection in real life or are good actors. One of the other effective things
that I noticed about the film trailer was the use of narration in the beginning.
By having this narration at the beginning before we are introduced to any of the
characters, it helps to set the tone for the whole film trailer. I think that this is an
effective technique and I will consider whether or not it would be worth
experimenting with this technique to help make my film trailer more effective.
2. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)
Once I had watched this film trailer I found myself persuaded that I wanted to create a
film trailer with a similar storyline to this film trailer. There were two main things that
caught my eye about this trailer and made it more effective, which was the use of music
and shot types. By using different music at the beginning of the trailer and at the end
helps to develop the storyline as it shows a change in the main characters life, which is
even further developed by the change in the genre of music as well. As the trailer
develops there is more point of view shots from the main characters point of view
which connotes that the film is going to about him and the struggles in his life because
the camera is shot through his eyes. I will attempt to include techniques like this in my
own film trailer to help provide the audience with a sense of what the film is generally
about and use subtle hints like the change in music to further suggest the tone of the
film trailer.
3. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Personally I think that this is an incredible film that helps to portray the daily
struggles of having to look after someone who is disabled. And the way that the
film is shown through the point of view of the older brother of the disabled boy, I
think is quite unexpected as the audience would expect it to be through the
younger brothers eyes. But I love the idea that it is shown through someone else
eyes and the effect it has on their life. I would love to be able to show this amount
of emotion and experiment with using this technique in my film trailer. Also this
trailer is different because of the storyline is within the family but also includes
some romance but its not the focus of the film and most people would expect this
genre to be about. So when I am coming up with more refined story ideas fro my
own film trailers I will consider whether it will have a more emotional effect if one
of the characters has a disability and whether it would be more effective on the
audience if it was from the family's point of view or the significant other.
