- The way business intelligence is used in organization has changed significantly over the years. One way of understanding these changes is using the analogy of these three waves of BI: In the early days of BI, organizations would typically have a team or person handling all the requests for insights from the business. This model is not very scalable, and it can take a long time for the answer to get back to the user. By the time it does, a new question probably has already come up. To solve for this lack of scalability and gap between BI team and end users, the second approach to BI was to get BI capabilities in the hands of analysts, who understand the business and can support decisions with analytics. With Power BI, we want to enable everyone in the organization to analyze their data, ask the questions that will help them run their business better, and act based on the insights they find.

There are more than 135 native data connectors. You can also write your custom connector for your data source. For Everyone – Power BI allows you to create interactive reports. supports data driven decision making. You can aggregate multiple reports to a dashboard on the Power BI Service and share this to all users with enterprise security. This helps in everyone making data driven decisions using Power BI. For every decision - The deliverables can be viewed on a variety of platforms. There are different ways to share the results, bringing the visuals to every person in your organization We will explore in more details through the next slides.
- Why Power BI? The Power BI Desktop report designer with endless possibilities, using more than 135 cloud and on-premise data sources, 250+ custom visualizations in addition to design templates and data shaping/transformation options. Power BI will help connecting, loading/transforming the data and creating reports, dashboards, applications and data visualization. Real time dashboard – In Power BI service, you can design a real time and interactive dashboard, using tiles, from the previously built and published reports. Real time capabilities are available for several of the visuals and the data sources. Power BI service and desktop can answer natural language queries (in English & Spanish), as AI insights built into out of the box visualizations (Q&A, decomposition tree & Key Influencers) Custom visuals can be added to the visuals gallery and custom visuals created by partners and community are available to be added to your report The deliverables can be viewed on a variety of platforms. Power BI is integrating with Excel, Power Point, SharePoint and Teams, reports can be embedded in the platforms and data connectors can be used to connect to data stored in those platforms. - Power BI Free If you have Office 365, you have access to Power BI. Knowing how to design and implement BI solution, it’s a different story. Here services come into picture. Power BI Pro For e.g. Customer bought 2 Pro License for 2 Data analysts or IT analysts and others are using Power BI Free So IT team can share, query and develop dashboards. However, other staff can simply view the dashboards.
- Everything you do in Microsoft Power BI can be broken down into a few basic building blocks. After you understand these building blocks, you can expand on each of them and begin creating elaborate and complex reports. Let’s explore the basic building blocks, discuss some simple things that can be built with them, and then get a glimpse into how complex things can also be created. Visualizations: Sometimes also referred to as a visual, it is a visual representation of data, like a chart, a color-coded map, or other interesting things you can create to represent your data visually. Power BI has all sorts of visualization types, and more are coming all the time. The following image shows a collection of different visualizations that were created in the Power BI service. <CLICK> Datasets: A collection of data from a combination of many different sources which you can filter and combine to provide a unique collection of data (a dataset) used to create visualizations. <CLICK> Reports: A collection of visualizations that appear together on one or more pages. <CLICK> Dashboards: A collection of visuals from a single page that you can share with others. Often, it's a selected group of visuals that provide quick insight into the data or story you're trying to present. <CLICK> Tiles: A single visualization on a report or a dashboard. It's the rectangular box that holds an individual visual.
- The common flow of work in Microsoft Power BI is to create a report in Power BI Desktop, publish it to the Power BI service, and then share it with others, so that they can view it in the service or on a mobile app. But because some people begin in the Power BI service, let’s get an overview of that first, and learn about an easy and popular way to quickly create visuals in Power BI: apps. An app is a collection of preset, ready-made visuals and reports that are shared with an entire organization. Using an app is like microwaving a TV dinner or ordering a fast-food value meal: you just have to press a few buttons or make a few comments, and you're quickly served a collection of entrees designed to go together, all presented in a tidy, ready-to-consume package. The canvas (the area in the center of the Power BI service) shows you the available sources of data in the Power BI service. There are apps for all sorts of online services. Update data in the Power BI service You can also choose to update the dataset for an app, or other data that you use in Power BI.
