Comparing Our Utensils to an Eagle’s


Introduction: All living things need energy in order to survive. Eagles get their
energy by eating food. What tools do they possess on their bodies to obtain this
food. And what are they eating?

Subject Areas: Science/Biology

Lesson Objectives:
   1. Identify tools humans use to eat their food
   2. Compare and contrast the tools humans use to those of an eagle’s
   3. Research and learn the diet of an eagle
   4. Learn how changes in the environment affect the diet of an eagle

Materials:
      Eating utensils (fork, spoon, knife, chopsticks, spork, etc)
      Venn diagram examples for the students to base their own off of
      Paper and pencils

Procedure:
   1. Bring a variety of utensils used by humans when they eat (fork, spoon, knife,
      chopsticks, spork, etc)
   2. Discuss the different ways that people go about eating their food
   3. Develop a Venn diagram to identify similarities and differences between
      humans using tools to eat and eagles doing the same
   4. Have the class research the diet of an eagle to identify components
   5. Discuss how an eagle would be impacted when changes in the environment
      affect its food sources

Assessment Suggestions:
   1. Students can receive participation grades during discussion activities
   2. Students could be graded on their accuracy when completing a written Venn
      diagram
   3. A scoring guide could be created to assess the written component of the
      written assignment.
