Eagles and Their Environment

Introduction: Although a bald eagle’s home may not be as conventional as a two-history house
with a fenced in yard, their humble abode provides plenty of protection. In their delicately
crafted nest the bald eagle does not only have shelter, but hopefully has the opportunity to
flourish in their environment.

Grade Level: 2-5

Estimated Time: The duration of the eagle cam

Lesson Objectives:

       1)   Understand how a bald eagle’s environment helps to sustain their life.
       2)   Be able to gather information and cite it correctly
       3)   How to work well with others
       4)   Building the nest together to create a sense of community within the classroom

Materials Needed:

       1) Computers to gather facts and watch the eagle cam
       2) Websites with bald eagle facts:
          http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/
          http://www.buzzle.com/articles/bald-eagle-habitat.html
       3) Sticks and leaves for mock eagle nest

Procedures:

       1) Begin the class period by letting students watch the eagle cam (let them watch it
          everyday for at least 10 minutes).
       2) Each day students will place sticks (gathered before project) in order to slowly
          create a mock bald eagle nest. By the end of the assignment the students will have
          made a human size nest.
       3) Divide the class into small groups to begin research.
       4) For two class periods students could research a bald eagles environment.
       5) Websites containing information about a bald eagle’s habitat:
          http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/
          http://www.buzzle.com/articles/bald-eagle-habitat.html
       6) Once each group has done research, they could list facts onto a poster
          Board. Each poster should list at least 15 facts.
       7) These facts could then be shared with the whole class.
Assessment Suggests:

          1) Students could be graded on how well they worked with others in their group.
          2) Students could be graded on participation points within their group.
          3) The presentation of their poster board could be graded.
