The shift from desktop computers to mobile apps,
Anywhere, Anytime
GOING MOBILE
THE EVOLUTION FROM ROOM-SIZED COMPUTERS
TO HANDHELD DEVICES…
• We learned about how computers went from isolated, large, clunky machines to
connected devices via the Internet.
• Then the Internet gradually became interactive with Web 2.0 features where you became
the designer and publisher.
• At the same time, computers were shrinking from those that once took up entire rooms, to
desktops, to laptops, to tablets.
CELL PHONES HAVE GOTTEN SMALLER TOO…
WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT MOBILE APPS?
• With the advent of ‘Apps’ many of our computing needs are now met through streamlined
programs made to be mobile and fit in the palm of our hands.
• Mobile apps are game-changing because they are mobile… they are smaller, lighter,
always next to us, and can be personalized to meet our needs. They can include and
combine our phone, fitness monitor, camera, gaming device, GPS, and who knows what
in the future.
• Breaks barriers and limits of old computing.
• Mobile Apps are applications designed to run on a small handheld device.
• They involve downloading and installing an app, from app store or marketplace.
• These allow users to play or use the content anywhere, anytime, with limited bandwidth
needed, and often regardless of connection.
HISTORY OF APPS…
• 30 years ago Steve Jobs predicted a software-distribution center that would allow
systems to be purchased via phone lines
• 1996: Palm OS, first handheld device.
• 1997: Nokia 6110 had first game in a phone, starting mobile gaming
• 2001: iPod, first generation released, promising 1,000 songs in your pocket
• 2003: iTunes music store launched with 200,000 songs at .99 cents, sells 1 million
songs in its first week.
• 2007: iPhone launched,sold 270,000 in the first 30 hours. 3rd party developers
allowed to create programs for it
• 2008
• App Store is launched, only 552 apps, and 135 were free. Within a week, 10
million downloads. In 60 days, reached 100 million downloads
• Fitbit released. First wearable mobile device. Tracks information about you, for
you.
• Android Market is launched by Google, becomes 2nd major distributor and Apples
rival.
• HTC Dream, or ‘Googlephone’ released with first Android operating system
• 2009: Blackberry World becomes 3rd major distributor of apps, WhatsApp instant
messaging app starts, Angry Birds launched (best selling app of all time, 1 Billion
downloads by 2012)
HISTORY OF APPS, CONT….
• 2010: ‘App’ voted Word of the Year
• 2011: Apps had added 300,000 new jobs to the US economy
• 2012: Facebook bought Instragram app company for $1 Billion dollars.
• 2013:
• Candy Crush released, most downloaded app of the year, more than Facebook, Angry
Birds, and YouTube.
• Flappy Bird was created in 2013 and pulled in 2014, after 50 million downloads. Pulled by
creator Dong Nguyen for fears of the game’s addictive qualitites.
• 1 million apps available in App Store, Google Play reaches 50 billion downloads
• Snapchat rejects $3 Billion offer from Facebook.
• 2014: 2 Billion smartphones predicted
• Facebook acquires WhatsApp for $19 Billion, releases FB Messenger.
• Snapchat has 700 Million photos shared a day.
• Game apps are most popular with 20% of downloads, Educational apps make up 10%, and
Social Networking apps are 2% of downloads.
THREE MAIN USES OF APPS
• I’m Bored: Used when waiting in line, in between appointments, to
fill time. Quick bite size interaction. Games, Books, Music, etc.
• I’m Local: You need to find something around you. Maps, gas,
theatre tickets, ratings. Yelp, Foursquare, etc.
• I’m Microtasking: Productivity tools allow people to get things
done remotely. Jotting down short notes, grocery list, responding
to emails, scheduling, quick purchases.
TIME ON APPS IS ON THE RISE
WHO’S USING APPS?
• Everyone
• Quickest growing market of app users: Over 70 years old
GET YOUR CREATIVITY FLOWING….
• Simple Mobile Apps that Made Millions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-MYvIJ1r-s
• Even a 12 year old can do it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkd9TWUtFm0
REVIEW AND DESIGN YOUR OWN APPS!
• This week in lab, you will create a Google Presentation (not a Powerpoint, we already did that) with 2 parts:
• 1. Write a review of 2 mobile apps, for any device, related to your current or future career, major or
interests, and review them in your Google Presentation.
• Please stay away from apps we all already know (Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest, etc).
Also don’t repeat your previous web app, and focus on the mobile benefits.
• Answer the specific questions in Blackboard (in Week 10 Content folder)
• 2. Create your own App! (conceptually) and describe it in your Google Presentation
• Think of an app idea that could potentially benefit those in your field or interest group.
• Address the specific questions in Blackboard
• Both of these tasks (2 reviews, and 1 app invention) will be covered in your Google presentation, and both
have very specific questions to cover.
• Share the Google presentation with me on our Blackboard submission page, and make the access so
‘Anyone with link can view.’
• Post your Google presentation to your Weebly site to add it to your portfolio.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT MOBILE APPS? • With the advent of ‘Apps’ many of our computing needs are now met through streamlined programs made to be mobile and fit in the palm of our hands. • Mobile apps are game-changing because they are mobile… they are smaller, lighter, always next to us, and can be personalized to meet our needs. They can include and combine our phone, fitness monitor, camera, gaming device, GPS, and who knows what in the future. • Breaks barriers and limits of old computing. • Mobile Apps are applications designed to run on a small handheld device. • They involve downloading and installing an app, from app store or marketplace. • These allow users to play or use the content anywhere, anytime, with limited bandwidth needed, and often regardless of connection.

  • 13. REVIEW AND DESIGN YOUR OWN APPS! • This week in lab, you will create a Google Presentation (not a Powerpoint, we already did that) with 2 parts: • 1. Write a review of 2 mobile apps, for any device, related to your current or future career, major or interests, and review them in your Google Presentation. • Please stay away from apps we all already know (Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest, etc). Also don’t repeat your previous web app, and focus on the mobile benefits. • Answer the specific questions in Blackboard (in Week 10 Content folder) • 2. Create your own App! (conceptually) and describe it in your Google Presentation • Think of an app idea that could potentially benefit those in your field or interest group. • Address the specific questions in Blackboard • Both of these tasks (2 reviews, and 1 app invention) will be covered in your Google presentation, and both have very specific questions to cover. • Share the Google presentation with me on our Blackboard submission page, and make the access so ‘Anyone with link can view.’ • Post your Google presentation to your Weebly site to add it to your portfolio.
