This document discusses different types of computer networks. It defines a computer network as a group of connected computers that share information and communication through common protocols. There are several types of networks including local area networks (LANs) that connect computers in a small area like a building, personal area networks (PANs) that connect devices within 10 meters of a person, metropolitan area networks (MANs) that connect local networks within a city or town, and wide area networks (WANs) that connect multiple LANs or MANs across a large geographic area. Each network type has different characteristics regarding size, connectivity range, and usage.
2. Computer Networks?
A group of computers which are connected to each other and follow similar usage
protocols for the purpose of sharing information and having communications provided
by the networking nodes is called a Computer Network.
A network may be small where it may include just one system or maybe as large as
what one may want.
The nodes may further be classified into various types. These include:
Personal Computers
Servers
Networking Hardware
General Hosts
3. Networking can be classified into three

5. Types of Computer Networks
LAN (Local Area Network)
PAN (Personal Area Network)
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
WAN (Wide Area Network)
6. LAN
Systems connected in a small network like in a building or a small office
It is inexpensive
It uses Ethernet or Token-ring technology
Two or more personal computers can be connected through wires or cables acting
as nodes
Transfer of data is fast and is highly score
7.
8. PAN
The smallest computer network
Devices may be connected through Bluetooth or other infra-red enables devices
It has a connectivity range of upto 10 metres
It covers an area of upto 30 feet
Personal devices belonging to a single person can be connected to each other
using PAN
9.
10. WAN
WAN is a wide area network that covers a large geographic area consisting of two
or more LANs or MANs.
A WAN is a group of local-area networks (LANs) or other networks that
communicate with one another.
This network is widely used to aid communication, the sharing of information, and
more between devices.
The first WAN was designed by the U.S. Air Force in the late 1950s

12. MAN
It is a computer network that connects multiple local area networks within a
metropolitan area
It could be a single big city, a town, multiple cities, or a building.
MAN stands in between LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network)
It is larger than LAN but smaller than WAN.
MAN is specially set up to bestow high-speed connectivity to the consumers.
