The Masjid-i Jahān-Numā commonly known as the Jama
Masjid is the principal mosque of old Delhi in India.
Commissioned by the mughal Emperor shah jahan, it is the
best-known mosque in India. Construction began in 1650 and was
completed in 1656. It lies at the beginning of the chawri bazaar
road, a very busy central street of old Delhi.
The later name, jama masjid, refers to the weekly Friday
noon congregation prayers of Muslims, Jummah, which are
usually done in a mosque, the "congregational mosque" or "jāma
masjid"
1.The courtyard of the mosque can be reached
from the east, north and south by three flights of
steps, all built of red sandstone.
2.The northern gate of the mosque has 39 steps.
3.The southern side of the mosque has 33 steps.
4.The eastern gate of the mosque was the rural
entrance and it has 35 steps.
5.These steps used to house food stalls, shops
and street entertainers.
6.In the morning the eastern side of the mosque
used to be converted into a bazaar for poultry
and birds in general.
7.The mosque faces west. Its three sides are
covered with open arched colonnades, each
having a lofty tower-like gateway in the center
•The foundation of the historic Jama Masjid
was laid on a hillock in Shahjahanabad by
the fifth Mughal Emperorof
India, Shahjahan, on Friday, October 19,
1650 AD,
•The mosque was the result of the efforts of
over 6,000 workers, over a period of six
years (1650–1656 AD). The cost of the
construction in those times was 1 million (1
million) Rupees. Emperor Shahjahan also
built the Taj Mahal at Agra and the Red
Fort in New Delhi, which stands opposite the
Jama Masjid
•the whole of the western chamber is a big
hall standing on 260 pillars all carved from
Hindu and Jain traditions. The central
courtyard is accessible from the East.
CNN-IBN reported how the Municipal
Corporation of Delhi is planning 60-foot
deep four-storey basement parking
area dangerously close to Jama Masjid,
the construction of which will damage
the foundations of the historic mosque
The ancient structure is now under
threat, not from terrorists but from the
Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which
is all set to redevelop the area by
digging dangerously close to the
ancient structure.
The MCD authorities have approved a
Rs 1200-crore plan for the revamp of
the precincts of Jama Masjid complex
which, experts say, can threaten the
very survival of the mosque in the long
run.
Jama Masjid is the biggest mosque in
Asia.
 The construction of the Jama Masjid was
ordered by the emperor Shah Jahan in the
year 1656, which was also the year the Taj
mahal was built
About 5,000 workers were involved in the
construction of the Jama Masjid, taking
about six years. The cost involved in the
construction in those times was about 10
million rupees in today’s economy
the length of the hall is about 61 meters,
where there are 11 entrances to the
prayer hall. The mosque has two huge
minarets which are about 41 meters high,
and there is 130 steps built with red stone
and marble. In addition there are four
minor minarets to the back side of the
mosque.
