How effective is the
 combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?

         George Mobley
As well as creating a documentary we created
two ancillary texts, a radio trailer and a double
page spread for a TV listings magazine. Both of
these were used to promote and advertise our
TV documentary so they had to appeal to the
same audience as our TV documentary.
Target Audience
Our target audience is young people, both male and female, aged 13-24 This
is because many would argue that this age group is the largest offender for
illegal downloading so hopefully the documentary would help make them
realize the negative effect illegal downloading is having on the music
industry.



There is no specific race or religion that our documentary is targeting and
although the main target audience is that of young people, it is more than
likely to appeal to parents of these children as well as they may be curious to
see what damage is being done by people illegally downloading music.
TV Listings Article
Our TV listings article combines well with the TV Documentary as it features
screen grabs from the documentary as images on the page to allow readers
to get an idea of what will be coming up in the documentary. We used the
image you can see below as the main image in our article as it is showing how
easy it is to download free music with todays technology.
We decided to use 'TV Choice' as even though its main audience is not young
people it appeals more to them than other tv listings magazines such as
'Radiotimes'

The bright colours and large images draw the readers attention but the magazine
still gives all the vital information needed about the tv documentary.




                                        We made sure the images were
                                        something recognisable to a young
                                        reader and the brightly coloured quotes
                                        and title are eye catching.
Radio Trailer
Throughout the radio trailer we used clips from the documentary which link the
well together. This makes it recognisable that the two products are linked when
both are watched and listened to.
Combined with the similar music that we used in both the documentary and radio
trailer I feel the two work well together and the radio trailer does a good job at
advertising the main product to the audience, something we were aiming to do
while creating both pieces.

For the radio trailer to do the best possible job of advertising the main product it is
important it is broadcast at the right time across national radio on Radio 1 Fm as
depending on the show this station has a high younger audience, something we
need to utilize when advertising the work.

Also with the nature of our documentary, 'Illegal Downloading' it seems fitting to
advertise over a platform that provides music for free to the country.
