Characteristic of Successful Product Development

Successful product development :
7. produced and sold profitably
8. profitability difficult to access
9. effort to assess the performance
a. Product quality – how good, satisfy customer needs, robust
& reliable, price, customers willing to pay

b. Product cost – manufacturing cost, how much profit accrues

c. Development time – quickly effort to complete, how
responsive to competitive forces, how quickly receive economic
returns

d. Development cost – how much spend to develop product
e. Development capability – better able to develop future
product.

Other performance criteria should ultimately lead to economic
success:

a) interests of other stakeholders in the enterprise

b) members of development team – creating an inherently
exciting product

c) members of community – concern about the product creates
job

d) workers and users – accountable to high safety standards

e) individuals – product make ecologically sound use of
resources and minimal dangerous waste products

Who Design and Develop Product

Interdisciplinary activity:

• Marketing – mediates the interaction between firm and
customers

• Design – lead role in defining the physical form of product to
best meet customer needs

• Manufacturing – designing, operating, coordinating the
production system in order to produce the product.

Duration and Cost of Product Development

How much time and money are required to develop new product:

• Time : very few products can develop < 1 yr, many 3 – 5 yrs,
some >10 yrs.

• Costs : roughly proportional to the number of people on the
project team and the duration of project.

Challenges of Product Development

Characteristics that make the product development challenging:

• Trade-offs – recognizing, understanding, managing trade-offs

• Dynamics - technologies improve, customers preference
evolve,

• Details - choice between A and B have an economic
implications of millions RM

• Time pressure – decisions must be made quickly without
waiting complete informations

• Economics – developing, producing and marketing new
products requires a large investment

Challenges makes interesting

For many people, interesting because it is challenging:

• Creation – begins with an idea, ends with the production of the
artifacts

• Satisfaction of societal and individual needs - all products
aims at satisfying needs

• Team diversity - successful requires many different skills and
talents. Development teams involve peoples from different
training, experiences perspectives and personalities

• Team spirits– team are often highly motivated, cooperative
group
