HAILING from the Athlone sub-
urb of Cape Town, proudly South
African R&B singing sensation
Jimmy Nevis has been domi-
nating the airwaves with chart
toppers on various radio sta-
tions and music channels across
Africa.
One such smash hit is 7764,
which has been the talk of the
town since the official music
video release. With his TRACE
Guest Star debut on the horizon,
set for broadcast on DStv 325 on
July 29 at 7pm, TRACE gauged
Nevis on how he created the
uplifting “close to home” com-
ponents encapsulated in his 7764
music video.
Tell us a bit more about the
track and how it was con-
ceived?
The track 7764 was one of the last
songsIrecordedforthealbumThe
Masses and the track is featured
as a tribute to where I’m from.
Some people are often confused
with the line “shout out ATL”;
thinking that I’m referring to
Atlanta in America, but among
my friends and family here,
“ATL” is how we refer to Athlone.
What’s the general mes-
sage you’re trying to con-
vey to listeners?
Thesongisverypersonalbecause,
although it has playful upbeat ele-
ments to it, the lyrics are actually
really deep. The song conveys a
true representation, good or bad,
of what happens in Athlone and
other South African areas alike.
In its entirety, the song is about
celebrating our people as people
before we begin to look at what
they have and don’t have. When
it boils down to the core of what
it means to love and hate, we are
all the same and we all know what
that feels like.
What memorable moments
did you have shooting 7764?
The music video was intention-
ally unscripted and this was a bit
nerve-wracking because I hadn’t
been back to the Cape flats in a
very long time. Despite this, I was
overwhelmed with the amount of
support and love I got from the
community. On set, people pass-
ing by immediately volunteered
to help out with the production,
both behind and in front of the
camera so that was a blessing.
What’s your favourite
scene in the video?
For one of the clips, we filmed at
a property in Athlone that had a
cluster of residences on it. Even
though I spent most of my child-
hood walking all over the streets
of Athlone, this was my first time
being in that specific area and the
set-up was incredible.
They had what looked like a
mini-town in one property –
where else can you find that? It
was definitely a unique vibe that
I’ll never forget.
Filming the last scene, with
all the kids, was also one of my
favourites.
Seeing their smiling faces in
sheer awe of the production pro-
cess was priceless.
What sort of behind-the-
scenes antics did you get
up to?
There was a point when I felt like
a baby-machine with the amount
of babies I held for pictures. It got
quite funny actually because I
had no idea just how many kids
lived in that area.
What do you call that
supersize sandwich shown
in one of the clips?
It’s called a Gatsby and I could
probably eat an entire serving.
I’m always telling people that
my community is about the three
Fs, “family” “faith” and “food”,
so incorporating that clip into
the video was important for me
because Athlone can give you the
best food encounters of your life.
Which artists would you
want to see featured on the
official 7764 remix?
Locally, it would be dope to have
AKA or The Soil on the track
and internationally, I think Jay
Z would be amazing because he
alwaysmanagestosendBrooklyn
a shout-out in most of his tracks.
In some ways, Jay Z inspired
me to rep my hometown of Ath-
lone and, because of how he’s
conveyed his love for Brooklyn,
I’d love to visit.

loveLife trains youth
IN EFFORTS to combat the high youth unemployment
rate, loveLife – South Africa’s national youth leader-
ship development organisation – is proud to announce
the launch of the loveLife Leadership Academy.
Youth unemployment remains one of the biggest
social and economic challenges facing South Africa.
According to Statistics SA’s recently released
youth labour mar-
ket report, youth
unemployment
has worsened since
2008 and more
young people have
given up looking
for work. In addition, the reports found that, this
year, as many as 3.6 million youth are unemployed
and are actively seeking work.
Understanding that high rates of youth unem-
ployment fuel various societal challenges, includ-
ing poverty, gender-based violence and crime, the
Academy offers an array of accredited training and
self-development skills programmes to bridge the
skills gap by providing educational, employment and
entrepreneurship opportunities.
Profit generated through the Academy’s training
interventions will be invested in loveLife’s youth lead-
ership development programmes.

During a 10-year sentence for murder- ing the leader of a rival South Central Los Angeles gang, Bobby Johnson (Glenn Plummer) finds religion and rehabilitation with the help of Muslim inmate Ali. Upon his release, Bobby returns home to find that his young son, Jimmie (Christian Coleman), has joined the Deuces, his old gang. HAILING from the Athlone sub- urb of Cape Town, proudly South African R&B singing sensation Jimmy Nevis has been domi- nating the airwaves with chart toppers on various radio sta- tions and music channels across Africa. One such smash hit is 7764, which has been the talk of the town since the official music video release. With his TRACE Guest Star debut on the horizon, set for broadcast on DStv 325 on July 29 at 7pm, TRACE gauged Nevis on how he created the uplifting “close to home” com- ponents encapsulated in his 7764 music video. Tell us a bit more about the track and how it was con- ceived? The track 7764 was one of the last songsIrecordedforthealbumThe Masses and the track is featured as a tribute to where I’m from. Some people are often confused with the line “shout out ATL”; thinking that I’m referring to Atlanta in America, but among my friends and family here, “ATL” is how we refer to Athlone. What’s the general mes- sage you’re trying to con- vey to listeners? Thesongisverypersonalbecause, although it has playful upbeat ele- ments to it, the lyrics are actually really deep. The song conveys a true representation, good or bad, of what happens in Athlone and other South African areas alike. In its entirety, the song is about celebrating our people as people before we begin to look at what they have and don’t have. When it boils down to the core of what it means to love and hate, we are all the same and we all know what that feels like. What memorable moments did you have shooting 7764? The music video was intention- ally unscripted and this was a bit nerve-wracking because I hadn’t been back to the Cape flats in a very long time. Despite this, I was overwhelmed with the amount of support and love I got from the community. On set, people pass- ing by immediately volunteered to help out with the production, both behind and in front of the camera so that was a blessing. What’s your favourite scene in the video? For one of the clips, we filmed at a property in Athlone that had a cluster of residences on it. Even though I spent most of my child- hood walking all over the streets of Athlone, this was my first time being in that specific area and the set-up was incredible. They had what looked like a mini-town in one property – where else can you find that? It was definitely a unique vibe that I’ll never forget. Filming the last scene, with all the kids, was also one of my favourites. Seeing their smiling faces in sheer awe of the production pro- cess was priceless. What sort of behind-the- scenes antics did you get up to? There was a point when I felt like a baby-machine with the amount of babies I held for pictures. It got quite funny actually because I had no idea just how many kids lived in that area. What do you call that supersize sandwich shown in one of the clips? It’s called a Gatsby and I could probably eat an entire serving. I’m always telling people that my community is about the three Fs, “family” “faith” and “food”, so incorporating that clip into the video was important for me because Athlone can give you the best food encounters of your life. Which artists would you want to see featured on the official 7764 remix? Locally, it would be dope to have AKA or The Soil on the track and internationally, I think Jay Z would be amazing because he alwaysmanagestosendBrooklyn a shout-out in most of his tracks. In some ways, Jay Z inspired me to rep my hometown of Ath- lone and, because of how he’s conveyed his love for Brooklyn, I’d love to visit. Youth unemployment remains one of the biggest social and economic challenges facing South Africa. According to Statistics SA’s recently released youth labour mar- ket report, youth unemployment has worsened since 2008 and more young people have given up looking for work. In addition, the reports found that, this year, as many as 3.6 million youth are unemployed and are actively seeking work. Understanding that high rates of youth unem- ployment fuel various societal challenges, includ- ing poverty, gender-based violence and crime, the Academy offers an array of accredited training and self-development skills programmes to bridge the skills gap by providing educational, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. Profit generated through the Academy’s training interventions will be invested in loveLife’s youth lead- ership development programmes.
