2. IBDP Requirements
 Over the course of the two-year programme,
students:
 study six subjects chosen from the six groups
 complete an extended essay (EE)
 follow a theory of knowledge course (TOK)
 participate in creativity, action, service (CAS).

 Independent
 Students have control & are responsible for getting it done
 Self-directed
 Students decide what they want to write about & how
they’re going to conduct & organize their research
 4000 words in length
 40 hours of work
 3 mandatory reflections and 3 informal meeting with
supervisor

6. Significance of the extended essay
The extended essay provides:
 practical preparation for university level research
 how to designing, conducting and reporting research
 time management skills
 better collaboration and communication skills

1. October 2016 – launch of EE
2. Support provided throughout process during IB Core time
for Research Topic & Question (IBDPC/EEC and TL)
3. Jan 2016 – Confirm EE subject area and RQ/RT
4. Feb 2017 – 1st reflection
5. March 2017 EE Café
6. May – 2000 words due
7. June – 3,000 words due/ 2nd reflection
8. August – 4000 words/first full draft due
9. September – viva voce’s/ 3rd reflection

10. Student Responsibilities
 Choose an appropriate topic
 Observe the regulations relating to the EE
 Meet internal school deadlines
 Follow-up Supervisor comments on ManageBac
 Write 3 mandatory reflections
 Keep in touch with the EE supervisor
 Attend the DP Core-times lessons
 Inquire if needed @DPC/EEC

11. Supervisor/Mentor
 Provides advice & guidance in the skills of undertaking research;
 Encourages & supports the student throughout the writing of the EE;
 Helps you decide on and refine student research question;
 Ok’s the final research question;
 Spends 3-5 hours (3 reflections and few informal meeting);
 Reads & comments on first draft only;
 Monitors the progress;
 Submits a predicted grade;
 Completes the supervisor's report;

 Explain to students the importance of the extended essay in the
overall context of the Diploma Programme;
 Ensure that students choose right subject before RT;
 Introduce, explain and support the reflection process;
 Provide exemplars of extended essays to supervisors and
students;
 help students plan EE effectively and to become independent
researchers;
 expert in ethical use of information@ academic honesty;
