2
To introduce the student to be familiar with CAD/CAM terminology & its capabilities.
To become familiar with CAD/CAM software, Graphical user interface & basic tools.
To recognize geometric and graphical elements of engineering design problems
To apply a “hands-on” understanding of the basic concepts of computer-aided manufacturing and
prototyping through group and individual projects
To study Basic features of CAM so as to be capable of accepting professional responsibilities and to
understand the associativity between design and manufacturing.
Integrate the CAD system and the CAM system by using the CAD system for modeling design
information and converting the CAD model into a CAM model for modeling the manufacturing
information.

5. Lecture #1Introduction to CAD/ CAM7/23/2020
5
Design is essentially a decision making
process
For every problem we need to design
solution.
“Design is to formulate a plan
to satisfy a particular need
and to create something with
a physical reality.”
1. What is Design?
GENERAL DESIGN
PROCEDURE
• Recognition of need
• Synthesis (Mechanism)
• Analysis of forces
• Material selection
• Design of elements (size and
stress)
• Modification
• Detailed drawing
• Production (Manufacturing)
7. Lecture #1Introduction to CAD/ CAM7/23/2020

What is Drawings?
- Drawing is rough sketch which give some message or
information about production. (like shape of product)
What is Drafting ?
- Drafting is a language of engineers with
exact scaling, dimension, measurements,
accuracy and with standard like ISO,
ASME…etc.

What does mechanical engineers do in C
– Mechanical engineers do drafting
and design and prototype testing
(analysis) operation in CAD.
– Use to creates graphic representation
of physical object.
Computer – Aided Design (CAD)
• One of the main applications of
computer technology is computer Aided
design (CAD), side by side with the
computer aided manufacturing (CAM).
• CAD stands for Computer Aided
Design and Computer Aided Drafting.
• It’s an integration of computer science
techniques for engineering design.
• The term computer aided design
characterizes any design activity which
incorporates an electronic computing
machine in the process of development ,
analysis or modification and optimization
of design.

Lecture #1Introduction to CAD/ CAM
Generally the main function of CAD is used to
– Create graphic representation (create 2D/3D drafting)
– 3D modelling (individual component modelling and Assembly modelling)
– Used for analysis (stress analysis, kinematic analysis,..etc.)
– Used for simulation the system( collusion simulation, robotic simulation..
etc.)

Computer Aided Manufacturing - CAM
• CAM technology involves computer systems that
plan, manage and control the manufacturing
operations through computer interface
• One of the most important areas of CAM is
numerical control (NC). This is a technique of using
programmed instructions to control a machine tool
that cuts, mills, grinds, punches or turns raw stock
into a finished part.
• Another significant CAM function is in the
programming of robots. Process planning is also a
target of computer automation.
