DESCENDING TRACTS OF
THE SPINAL CORD
DESCENDING TRACTS
• Motor neurons in the anterior gray column of the spinal cord send axons to
innervate skeletal muscle
• Through the anterior roots of the spinal nerves
• Motor neurons are referred to as lower motor neuron
• Constitute the final common pathway to the muscle
• Lower motor neuron constantly bombarded by the nerve impulses that
descend from the medulla, pons, midbrain, and cerebral cortex.
• Nerve fibers that descend in white matter from different supraspinal nerve
centers are segregated into nerve bundles called descending tracts
• Supraspinal neurons and their tract are referred to as upper motor
neurons and provides numerous separate pathways that can influence
motor activity.
ANATOMICAL ORGANIZATION
First-order neuron
• Has its cell body in the cerebral cortex.
Second-order neuron
• an internuncial neuron, situated in the
anterior gray column of the spinal cord
Third-order neuron
• the lower motor neuron, in the anterior gray
column.
Descending pathway for the cerebral cortex is
made up of three neurons:
FUNCTIONS
 Corticospinal tracts- voluntary, discrete, and skilled movements.
 Reticulospinal tracts- facilitate or inhibit the activity of the alpha and
gamma motor neurons.
 Rubrospinal tract- facilitates the activity of flexor muscles and
inhibits the activity of the extensor or antigravity muscles.
 Tectospinal tract- reflex postural movements in response to visual
stimuli.
 Vestibulospinal tract- facilitates the activity of the extensor muscles,
inhibits the activity of the flexor muscles, and is concerned with the
postural activity associated with balance.
 Olivospinal tract- may play a role in muscular activity, but some
doubt its existence.
 Descending autonomic fibers- control of visceral activity.
CORTICOSPINAL TRACT
• Fibers of the corticospinal tract arise as axons of the pyramidal cells
situated in the fifth layer of the cerebral cortex
• Third of fibers originate from the primary motor cortex (area 4)
• Secondary motor cortex (area 6)
• Parietal lobe (3,1, and 2)
• Two thirds of fibers arise from precentral gyrus
• Electrical stimulation of different parts of the precentral gyrus produces
movements of different parts of the opposite side of the body
• Homunuclus
→Region of controlling the face is situated inferiorly
→Region controlling the lower limb is situated superiorly and on
the medial surface of the hemisphere
→Homunculus is a distorted picture of the body, with various parts having a
size proportional to the area of the cerebral cortex devoted to their control
→Most corticospinal fibers are myelinated and are relatively slow conducting
small fibers
• Descending fibers converge in corona radiata
• Pass through the posterior limb of the internal capsule
• Concerned with cervical portions of the body: closest to the genu
• Posteriorly are concerned with : lower extremity
• Tract continues through middle three fifths of the basis penduncli of the midbrain
• cervical portions of the body are situated: medially
• concerned with the leg are placed: laterally
• Entering the pons, tract is broken into many bundles by the transverse pontocerebellar
fibers
• In the medulla oblongata the bundles become grouped together along the anterior
border to form a swelling known as the pyramid (pyramidal tract).
• Junction of the medulla oblongata and the spinal cord most fibers cross midline at
the decussation of the pyramids
• Enter the lateral white column of the spinal cord to form lateral corticospinal tract
• Remaining fibers do not cross in the decussation but descend in the anterior white
column of the spinal cord as the anterior corticospinal tract
• Fibers cross the midline and terminate in anterior gray column of the spinal cord
segments in the cervical and upper thoracic regions
• Lateral corticospinal tract descends the length of spinal cord
• Fibers terminate in the anterior gray column of all the spinal cord segments.
• Only largest corticospinal fibers synapse directly with the motor neurons
• Corticospinal tracts not sole pathway for serving voluntary movement
• Used in performing rapid skilled movements
• Basic voluntary movements are mediated by other descending tracts.
Branches
1. Branches are given off early In their descent and return to the cerebral
cortex to inhibit activity in adjacent regions of the cortex.
2. Branches pass to the caudate and lentiform nuclei, the red nuclei, and
the olivary nuclei and the reticular formation. These branches keep the
subcortical regions informed about the cortical motor activity.
Once alerted, the subcortical regions may react and send their own
nervous impulses to the alpha and gamma motor neurons by other
descending pathways.
RETICULOSPINAL TRACT
Reticular formation
‒ Group of scattered nerve cells and nerve
fibers in midbrain, Pons and Medulla
• From Pons these neurons send uncrossed
axons down into the anterior white column
of the spinal cord and form Pontine
(Medial) Reticulospinal Tract.
• From medulla these neurons send crossed
and uncrossed axons down into the lateral
white column of the spinal cord and form
Medullary (Lateral) Reticulospinal Tract.
• Both sets of fibers enter in the anterior
gray columns of the spinal cord
• Reticulospinal fibers are also now thought to include the
descending autonomic fibers
• Reticulospinal tracts provide a pathway by which the hypothalamus
can control the sympathetic outflow and the sacral parasympathetic
outflow.
TECTOSPINAL TRACT
• Fibers of this tract arise from nerve cells in the
superior colliculus of the midbrain.
• Most of the fibers cross the midline soon after
their origin and descend through the
brainstem close to the medial longitudinal
fasciculus.
• The tectospinal tract descends through the
anterior white column of the spinal cord close
to the anterior median fissure
• Majority of the fibers terminate In the anterior
gray column in the upper cervical segments of
the spinal cord by synapsing with lnternuncial
neurons.
• These fibers are believed to be concerned
with reflex postural movements in response to
visual stimuli.
RUBROSPINAL TRACT
• Red nucleus is situated in the tegmentum of
the midbrain at the level of the superior
colliculus
• The axons of neurons in this nucleus cross
the midline at the level of the nucleus and
descend as the rubrospinal tract through the
pons and medulla oblongata to enter the
lateral white column of the spinal cord.
• Neurons of the red nucleus receive afferent
Impulses through connections with the
cerebral cortex and the cerebellum.
• ls believed to be an Important Indirect
pathway by which the cerebral cortex and the
cerebellum can influence alpha and gamma
motor neuron activity.
VESTIBULOSPINAL TRACT
• Vestibular nuclei are situated in the pons
and medulla oblongata beneath the floor of
the fourth ventricle
• Receives afferent fibers from the inner ear
through the vestibular nerve and from the
cerebellum.
• Neurons of the lateral vestibular nucleus give
rise to the axons that form the vestibulospinal
tract.
• The tract descends uncrossed through the
medulla and through the length of the spinal
cord in the anterior white column
• The fibers terminate by synapsing with
internuncial neurons of the anterior gray
column of the spinal cord.
OLIVOSPINAL TRACT
• Olivospinal tract was thought to
arise form the inferior olivary
nucleus
• To descend in the lateral white
column of the spinal cord
• To influence the activity of the
motor neurons in the anterior gray
column.
DESCENDING AUTONOMIC FIBERS
Higher centers of the CNS associated with the control of autonomic activity are
situated in the:
→Cerebral Cortex
→Hypothalamus
→Amygdaloid Complex
→Reticular Formation
• Distinct tracts have not been recognized
• Investigation of spinal cord lesions has demonstrated that descending autonomic
tracts do exist and probably form part of the reticulospinal tract.
• The fibers arise from neurons in the higher centers and cross the midline in the
brainstem
• believed to descend in the lateral white column of the spinal cord and to terminate
by synapsing on the autonomic motor cells in the lateral gray columns in the
thoracic and upper lumbar (sympathetic outflow) and midsacral (parasympathetic)
levels of the spinal cord.

DESCENDING-TRACTS.pptx

  • 2. DESCENDING TRACTS • Motor neurons in the anterior gray column of the spinal cord send axons to innervate skeletal muscle • Through the anterior roots of the spinal nerves • Motor neurons are referred to as lower motor neuron • Constitute the final common pathway to the muscle • Lower motor neuron constantly bombarded by the nerve impulses that descend from the medulla, pons, midbrain, and cerebral cortex. • Nerve fibers that descend in white matter from different supraspinal nerve centers are segregated into nerve bundles called descending tracts • Supraspinal neurons and their tract are referred to as upper motor neurons and provides numerous separate pathways that can influence motor activity.
  • 3. ANATOMICAL ORGANIZATION First-order neuron • Has its cell body in the cerebral cortex. Second-order neuron • an internuncial neuron, situated in the anterior gray column of the spinal cord Third-order neuron • the lower motor neuron, in the anterior gray column. Descending pathway for the cerebral cortex is made up of three neurons:
  • 4. FUNCTIONS  Corticospinal tracts- voluntary, discrete, and skilled movements.  Reticulospinal tracts- facilitate or inhibit the activity of the alpha and gamma motor neurons.  Rubrospinal tract- facilitates the activity of flexor muscles and inhibits the activity of the extensor or antigravity muscles.  Tectospinal tract- reflex postural movements in response to visual stimuli.  Vestibulospinal tract- facilitates the activity of the extensor muscles, inhibits the activity of the flexor muscles, and is concerned with the postural activity associated with balance.  Olivospinal tract- may play a role in muscular activity, but some doubt its existence.  Descending autonomic fibers- control of visceral activity.
  • 5. CORTICOSPINAL TRACT • Fibers of the corticospinal tract arise as axons of the pyramidal cells situated in the fifth layer of the cerebral cortex • Third of fibers originate from the primary motor cortex (area 4) • Secondary motor cortex (area 6) • Parietal lobe (3,1, and 2) • Two thirds of fibers arise from precentral gyrus • Electrical stimulation of different parts of the precentral gyrus produces movements of different parts of the opposite side of the body • Homunuclus →Region of controlling the face is situated inferiorly →Region controlling the lower limb is situated superiorly and on the medial surface of the hemisphere
  • 6. →Homunculus is a distorted picture of the body, with various parts having a size proportional to the area of the cerebral cortex devoted to their control →Most corticospinal fibers are myelinated and are relatively slow conducting small fibers • Descending fibers converge in corona radiata • Pass through the posterior limb of the internal capsule • Concerned with cervical portions of the body: closest to the genu • Posteriorly are concerned with : lower extremity • Tract continues through middle three fifths of the basis penduncli of the midbrain • cervical portions of the body are situated: medially • concerned with the leg are placed: laterally • Entering the pons, tract is broken into many bundles by the transverse pontocerebellar fibers • In the medulla oblongata the bundles become grouped together along the anterior border to form a swelling known as the pyramid (pyramidal tract).
  • 7. • Junction of the medulla oblongata and the spinal cord most fibers cross midline at the decussation of the pyramids • Enter the lateral white column of the spinal cord to form lateral corticospinal tract • Remaining fibers do not cross in the decussation but descend in the anterior white column of the spinal cord as the anterior corticospinal tract • Fibers cross the midline and terminate in anterior gray column of the spinal cord segments in the cervical and upper thoracic regions • Lateral corticospinal tract descends the length of spinal cord • Fibers terminate in the anterior gray column of all the spinal cord segments. • Only largest corticospinal fibers synapse directly with the motor neurons • Corticospinal tracts not sole pathway for serving voluntary movement • Used in performing rapid skilled movements • Basic voluntary movements are mediated by other descending tracts.
  • 8. Branches 1. Branches are given off early In their descent and return to the cerebral cortex to inhibit activity in adjacent regions of the cortex. 2. Branches pass to the caudate and lentiform nuclei, the red nuclei, and the olivary nuclei and the reticular formation. These branches keep the subcortical regions informed about the cortical motor activity. Once alerted, the subcortical regions may react and send their own nervous impulses to the alpha and gamma motor neurons by other descending pathways.

  • 11. RETICULOSPINAL TRACT Reticular formation ‒ Group of scattered nerve cells and nerve fibers in midbrain, Pons and Medulla • From Pons these neurons send uncrossed axons down into the anterior white column of the spinal cord and form Pontine (Medial) Reticulospinal Tract. • From medulla these neurons send crossed and uncrossed axons down into the lateral white column of the spinal cord and form Medullary (Lateral) Reticulospinal Tract. • Both sets of fibers enter in the anterior gray columns of the spinal cord
  • 12. • Reticulospinal fibers are also now thought to include the descending autonomic fibers • Reticulospinal tracts provide a pathway by which the hypothalamus can control the sympathetic outflow and the sacral parasympathetic outflow.
  • 13. TECTOSPINAL TRACT • Fibers of this tract arise from nerve cells in the superior colliculus of the midbrain. • Most of the fibers cross the midline soon after their origin and descend through the brainstem close to the medial longitudinal fasciculus. • The tectospinal tract descends through the anterior white column of the spinal cord close to the anterior median fissure • Majority of the fibers terminate In the anterior gray column in the upper cervical segments of the spinal cord by synapsing with lnternuncial neurons. • These fibers are believed to be concerned with reflex postural movements in response to visual stimuli.
  • 14. RUBROSPINAL TRACT • Red nucleus is situated in the tegmentum of the midbrain at the level of the superior colliculus • The axons of neurons in this nucleus cross the midline at the level of the nucleus and descend as the rubrospinal tract through the pons and medulla oblongata to enter the lateral white column of the spinal cord. • Neurons of the red nucleus receive afferent Impulses through connections with the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum. • ls believed to be an Important Indirect pathway by which the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum can influence alpha and gamma motor neuron activity.
  • 15. VESTIBULOSPINAL TRACT • Vestibular nuclei are situated in the pons and medulla oblongata beneath the floor of the fourth ventricle • Receives afferent fibers from the inner ear through the vestibular nerve and from the cerebellum. • Neurons of the lateral vestibular nucleus give rise to the axons that form the vestibulospinal tract. • The tract descends uncrossed through the medulla and through the length of the spinal cord in the anterior white column • The fibers terminate by synapsing with internuncial neurons of the anterior gray column of the spinal cord.
  • 16. OLIVOSPINAL TRACT • Olivospinal tract was thought to arise form the inferior olivary nucleus • To descend in the lateral white column of the spinal cord • To influence the activity of the motor neurons in the anterior gray column.
  • 17. DESCENDING AUTONOMIC FIBERS Higher centers of the CNS associated with the control of autonomic activity are situated in the: →Cerebral Cortex →Hypothalamus →Amygdaloid Complex →Reticular Formation • Distinct tracts have not been recognized • Investigation of spinal cord lesions has demonstrated that descending autonomic tracts do exist and probably form part of the reticulospinal tract. • The fibers arise from neurons in the higher centers and cross the midline in the brainstem • believed to descend in the lateral white column of the spinal cord and to terminate by synapsing on the autonomic motor cells in the lateral gray columns in the thoracic and upper lumbar (sympathetic outflow) and midsacral (parasympathetic) levels of the spinal cord.
