4. TOURISM INDUSTRY IN MAURITIUS
(AfricaMONEY)
A report recently released by international market research firm âResearch
and Marketsâ shows only marginal growth in domestic tourist volumes in
Mauritius, which are expected to rise at a Compound Annual Growth Rate
(CAGR) of 0.31% over the five-year forecast period, to reach 1 million by
2018.
After a significant downfall in 2009 due to the Eurozone crisis, given that
the European market was the key source market of Mauritius, massive
promotional campaigns were undertaken by the Mauritian Tourism
Promotion Authority (MTPA), in order to make Mauritius shift from its
traditional market to emerging ones such as China and India.
Promoting Mauritius as a prime holiday island destination was really
fruitful, as an increase in the number of visitors were registered, with
993,106 visitors coming to Mauritius in 2013 against 965,441 in 2012.
However, tourism earnings for the year 2013 showed a decline at Rs 40,557
million, down by 8.6 % from Rs 44,378 million in 2012.
Thus, with all these changes in the coming future the government must
take the initiative to develop new infrastructure, implement more tourism-
related projects and adopt various methods to promote domestic tourism in
order to increase domestic tourist volumes.

5. FINDING TOURISM
JOBS IN MAURITIUS
Tourism is the third pillar of the economy of Mauritius after
the manufacturing sector and Agriculture. The tourism
contributes significantly to economic growth of the island
and has been a key factor in the overall development of
Mauritius.
In the past two decades tourist arrivals increased at an
average annual rate of 9 % with a corresponding increase of
about 21% in tourism receipts. Tourism contributed about
14 % of Mauritius GDP.
6. THERE ARE 8 SECTORS IN TOURISM
1. Accommodation is the most vital component of the tourism product and the tourist destination.
2. Food & Beverage is the fastest growing sector in tourism.
3. Adventure Tourism and Recreation - These include golf and tennis, outdoor adventure and
recreation; marine facilities and bone fishing lodges.
4. Transportation is divided in to three categories: air, ground and water. Airlines are used by many
tourists and are national, regional or international. Ground transportation includes taxis, car rentals and tour
buses. Water transportation is primarily by cruise lines and ferries.
5. Attractions are either natural (Seventh coloured earth, Chamarel), heritage (historical buildings,
museum, forts, old churches) leisure (casinos) or man-made (Waterpark).
6. Travel Trade - An important sector using wholesalers, tour operators and travel agents who package
the travel experiences. The packages consist of different elements of the travel such as air and ground
transportation, accommodation, meals, entertainment as well as other activities.
7. Events & Conferences - This sector is a major reason for travel and is classified in the three
groups, special events, meeting and convention and trade shows.
8. Tourism Services - It deals with marketing services, research and information management,
