TYPES OF DELIVERY
• Manuscript Presentations
  – Reading word for word
  – Boring, halting, jerky
  – May make mistakes without even knowing
  – Mechanical and lifeless
  – Lack of sincerity and credibility
  – May be too long and detailed for oral communic.
• Memorized Presentations
  – Sounds memorized
  – Material controls you, rather than other way
    around
  – Robs you of being natural
  – Guarantees stage-fright
  – Focus on remembering instead of getting involved
  – Sometimes it is necessary to memorize parts
     • Salesman – Essential features of a product
• Extemporaneous Presentations
  – Planned and rehearsed, not word for word
  – Seems spontaneous and even effortless
  – Will never be the exact same twice
  – May respond to audience’s nonverbal cues for
    details
  – Notes are used as reminders. Characteristics:
     • Notes should be brief
     • Notes should be legible
     • Notes should not be unobstructive
• Impromptu Presentations
  –   Unexpected, off-the-cuff talk
  –   Most of the time will be on subject you know
  –   Listeners won’t expect perfection
  –   Guidelines
       •   Predict when you may be asked
       •   Accept invitation with assurance
       •   Present a definite viewpoint early
       •   Present reasons, logic, or facts to support viewpoint
       •   Don’t apologize
       •   Don’t ramble on
