Decision making
Truly successful decision making relies on a balance
between deliberate and instinctive thinking.
-- Malcom Gladwell, Blink.
・Decision making starts from instinctive thought.
・Instinctive thinking and deliberate thinking are
two different systems in the brain.
・Instinctive thinking might be emotional while
deliberate thinking might be analytical and
logical.
・What’s the decision based on just instinctive
or on just deliberate thinking? To think this
question is required in order to understand
Malcom’s quote.

Decision Making Process
Perception
Thinking
Judgement
Decision
Organize, interpret a lot
of information, enabling
us to recognize
meanings of objects and
events.
Influenced by
・emotion
・experience/knowledge
・memory
・possible outcomes
and involves statistics and
probability people isn’t
good at.
The process is simple, however it is difficult due to the complexity of the
brain structure and functions, such as perception, thinking and judgement.
What is thinking?

What I’ve learned
・Decision making starts from specific perception, for example,
looking at an attractive item then be eager to buy it. This
“be eager to buy” might be instinctive thought.
・However, most of us consider other conditions, such as price,
whether it is suitable or not, possession of similar items, etc.
these consideration might be deliberate thought.
・To decide to buy or not to buy, it seems to be good practice to
take a lot of deliberate thought. However, if someone takes too
much deliberate thought, she might forget instinctive thought.
・Instinctive thought is essentially vital ability for human being,
so forgetting it may bring bad decision. Therefore taking balance
between instinctive and deliberate thinking is important and
we should learn how well to keep this balance when we make
decisions.

・The safety mechanism of the brain to control movements of body
when dreaming.
