6. Four Wheeled Frenzy Unfortunately, safety concerns left over from the three-wheeled machines led to a mass exodus of OEM support from ATV racing in the late 80’s. Factory riders dried up, and the manufacturers stopped producing performance-focused racing machines. But while those dark days could have sent many scrambling to other sports, the die-hard, committed loyalists of the ATV racing family carried the flame through the 1990’s. Stars like Gary Denton, Tim Farr, and Doug Gust fought for the GNC titles on machines built almost entirely of aftermarket components - with pride, instead of factory support, as their motivation. After the dawn of the new millennium, however, light began to form at the end of the tunnel. ATV racing and riding was growing once again. To further expand the sport, the AMA formed the ATVA (All Terrain-Vehicle Association) and then in 2002 the GNC Series went through an evolution that split the MS and TT series into separate championships. This made the titles more accessible to riders who could only afford to specialize in one series. Manufacturers started producing race-ready ATVs again, and production classes opened up to the sport a new generation of talent.

The ATVPG (ATV Promoters Group) administers the production of the series to create uniformity and consistency to event production and sponsorship implementation. The AMA ATV Motocross Championship is unquestionably the premier amateur ATV motocross series in the world, offering classes for riders as young as 4 years and as old as they want to be, and for machines from 50cc to 450cc. 14. Mark Madl Two AMA national motocross championships in three years. Five Pro-Am Production wins, 8 races undefeated. These are accomplishments any professional racer would relish. Yet they are the feats of just one man - Madl Racing’s Mark Madl. Madl is one of the rising top riders in ATV motocross. Born and raised in Kathleen FL, madl sttarted riding quads with family and friends. At the young age of 13, Madl started racing in the AMA National series in the Youth Production class (300cc ages 13-15). With the help of his family, who have been a constant in the pits with Madl, he was able to clench the 2009 Youth Production Championship and the AMA Youth Rider of the Year title. Madl was turning 16 in the off season, which would allow him to ride a 450cc atv in the amateur classes. Madl made a bold decision at this point to move straight from the Youth class to the Pro-Am classes. Riding with and gaining valuable experience from the now seasoned pro riders, Madl was able to finish in the top 10 in 4 races. The following season in 2011, Mad threw down the gauntlet. After signing on with the Blue Rok race team, Madl was able to give the team their first win in the Pro-Am classes. He never looked back from then on and headed straight to the top of the championship points. Madl found himself on the podium every race during the Pro-Am Production races and nearly every time in the Pro-Am Unlimited Class. The 2012 season is looking strong with the sponsor on board such as Ditch Witch, Utilimap, Rath Racing, Flying Racing, Hinson Clutches and more. Madl hopes to start his rookie pro-class season as strong as he did in the Pro-Am classes in 2011.
