‱ How did you attract/address your audienceHave you used a direct mode of address? What language devices have you used?Give clear examples from you magazine.Discuss images as well as written text.
Direct Mode Of Address - Images I have used images with both direct address and ones without direct address to add to the realism of the magazine. For my front cover I used an image with direct address as the artist is looking directly into the camera lens as though looking at the audience, by doing this I have attracted the audiences attention as they feel pulled in by the model as though she is looking directly at them. Especially as the front cover is the first thing they will be seeing it is crucial to get peoples attention straight away in order to drag them in, by having the model looking directly at the audience I think I have successfully done so. I used none direct address images in both the contents page and in the double page spread as well as direct address images. I did this in order for the pictures too look natural rather than having all the pictures look like the models are posing. This makes them look naturally ‘gangster’ like and naturally fit for the genre of Hip-Hop/R&B
Mise-en-scene costume For the female models I have used two different costumes one of which is similar to the guys costume which includes hoods and jeans but skinny jeans rather than baggy jeans to make the model look feminine even whilst wearing a hood. The other costume is more stylish and feminine which includes skinny jeans, stylish shirts or tops and accessories. I have done this so that all female audiences can relate to the models as some female audiences tend to dress up and look very feminine, caring about how they look whereas others tend to not care much about how they look and stick to wearing hoodys. By doing this I am trying to attract every audiences attention as they can all relate to one of the models and will be familiar with the dress sense. The costumes I have used for my models are those you would see my audience wear. For example the guy models are wearing hoodys and baggy jeans or tracksuits which is what you would usually see fans of Hip-Hop/R&B wear. I have done this in order to attract my audience as they will straight away recognise the genre of the magazine just by the costumes, the will also be able to reflect to them and see a sense of characteristics in the models that they too have. Whereas if the models where wearing other costumes such as jeans and shirts looking smart, my audience would not be able to recognise the genre of the magazine and I would have failed to attract the audiences attention.
Poses and body language For my front cover I decided to use a pose that connotes power and intimidation as other magazines of the same genre use those representations and have successfully managed to attract their audience. I have done this by having my model hold the hood over her head and slightly tilt her head to the side. By having her pose in this way she looks rather intimidating and arrogant which are representations usually associated with R&B and Hip-Hop. As the front cover is the first page the audience will see it is important to attract them immediately and so I have tried to use the right pose for them to be able to spot the magazine straightaway and recognise the genre of the magazine just by the pose. I have continued using poses with the same representations of arrogance, power and intimidation throughout my contents page and main article. Poses that I have used include; Holding the hip, hands in pockets, feet on wall, tilt of the head etc. All of these poses are ones which you would usually see in a music magazine of my genre. By using these poses I am attracting my audience as these poses are ones they are familiar with and probably the type of poses they would hold when taking pictures with a group of mates and so they could also relate to them.
props Here one of my artists from the contents page is using a mixer which is a prop you would find in a studio where artists make their music. This would attract the audience as they are seeing the artist make her music which is what she does best. In music of the genre R&B/Hip-Hop they are seen using studio props a lot to make their music and so magazines of this genre sometimes tend to use images of the artists music in works at the studio. Many magazines do this as a way of connecting to the audience and relating to them as there are some who also make their own music and emulate those artists who do so successfully, also as the audience are interested in learning about the music world and what the process is like for them.
Typography and colour scheme The colour scheme I used throughout my magazine was black white and blue. This is because these colours stand out and they suit my target audience as they are loud, in the face and are for both genders. These colours also connote the genre very well and therefore do a good job in attracting the audience. The colours express the characteristics of the sort of magazine they wish to buy which in this case is Hip-Hop/R&B. Usually in magazines of this genre you would see the main colours being black white and one other colour which generally is blue or red and so I chose black, white and blue as my three main colours for it to look like a classic R&B/Hip-Hop genre magazine. By doing this it attracts the audience straight away as they would immediately be able to recognise the genre of the magazine just by the colours used. The fonts I used were; Cooper Black, Eras Bold ITC and Gill Sans Ultra Bold. I used these fonts as all three suit my genre very well because they are all bold, large and stand out, these fonts helped me to further attract my audience as they prefer a font that stands out and is eye catching rather than a font that is just plain and simple. By using the right font I have managed to attract the target audience. Cooper Black - ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Eras Bold ITC - ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Gill Sans Ultra Bold - ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Photos Every photo I have used in my magazine symbolises characteristics of the artist. For example this first image of the artist (Mia Hides) looking up represents her as being carefree and in her own world of music as though living her lyrics. Here Mia Hides is represented as being rather confident about herself and up front. She looks very youthful and relaxed like she has nothing going wrong and everything is going just right and her way. In this image the artist is not smiling and looks rather proud and confident in herself as though she has come a long way in the music industry, she also looks quite intimidating to some extent and seems to have a sense of pride to her. In all three images she is wearing a hood on her head which to some extent makes her look intimidating, she also looks very youthful and just to her self. Although she looks slightly intimidating she also looks very amicable. All these representations are ones of my audience and so they could very easily relate to her, by using these representation I am able to successfully attract the target audience.
I have included a freebie of free downloads in my music magazine because from the questionnaire I had previously conducted I found that the majority of my audience preferred a music magazine that contained a freebie. I decided to give free downloads as most people later seemed to prefer this and this way they would have to go on to the website to redeem their free downloads which means they will be familiar with the Slant website and will be able to roam the website whoever they like. Other than free downloads I also included competitions in my music magazine where they have a chance to win backstage passes, front row seats and a chance to meet some of their favourite celebrities. By adding competitions I have attracted more audience as many would want to win those competitions and may even buy the magazine mainly just for the competitions .
I have included additional cover lines to present the audience with more information of what the magazine includes. For example I have added names of other artists that will be included in the music magazine, I have done this as it will attract a wider audience as some people may like MarvieMcCoy but not like Kelly K whereas if I had only included the main artist Mia Hides there may be some people who do not like her so much and therefore will not buy the magazine but if they see that it includes other artists they will be attracted to the magazine and will be more likely than not to end up buying it. I have also included a floating quote from one of the other artists, by having done this I am providing the audience with a little of what’s inside and therefore attracting the audience into wanting to read more and find out what’s going to happen as they will be left curious until they buy the magazine and find out for themselves.
In my main article I have added a few floating quotes, enlarged them and added a shadow to them, by doing this I have made them stand out and more eye-catching. I added a floating quotes as this gives the audience a bit of the juicy bits of what the articles about, this will make them curious and wonder what it could be about therefore getting them excited and making them want to read on. I have used a question and answer structure rather than using a continuous prose as continuous prose is more for adults and the mature audience, my audience would find it rather boring and dull and would not be very interested in reading on whereas question and answer seems more exciting and appeals to the younger audience more as it is simpler for them. Rather than keeping it all written text I have added images to attract the audience as they prefer images in their magazines rather than it being all text because they would find that rather dull and it would not really encourage them to wanting to read on whereas having images livens it up a little and makes it appeal better to them. In my written text I used some slang rather than used formal standard English throughout as this is more for the mature adults and the younger audience tend to speak in slang, so by adding slang text they will be familiar with it and can easily relate to it. I also did not use complicated words that they would not understand but instead used simple short words to make it appeal better to my target audience as they are of a young age bracket and it makes it easier for them to read and understand. I also added some action in brackets where she is talking for example (laughs) I have done this because the audience can imagine how the artist reacts to the questions and whether she is serious or joking about which allso appeals to my audience as they would be interested is knowing the artists characteristics.

Question 5

  • 1. ‱ How did you attract/address your audienceHave you used a direct mode of address? What language devices have you used?Give clear examples from you magazine.Discuss images as well as written text.
  • 5. props Here one of my artists from the contents page is using a mixer which is a prop you would find in a studio where artists make their music.
