Environmental Issue Project 5 - Rough Draft (HUMAN OVERPOPULATION)
Class,
A few tips to maximize your grade on the Research Project paper, both rough draft and final:
1) Your paper should be broken into sections, using the "Key Points" shown in the Environmental Issue Project - Introduction & Instructions (Week 2) as section headings.
2) Your rough draft should be essentially complete, but unpolished. It should not be significantly different than your final polished paper. In other words, it should be full length, with a complete reference list. (A main purpose for a rough draft is to receive feedback. You can't get feedback on what's not there!) It can have some issues with spelling, grammar, arrangement of sections, etc. which should be fixed by the final paper.
3) The minimum length applies to the body of text, excluding any cover/intro pages, graphics, quotes, reference list, etc.
4) Do not plagiarize, as it could result in a "0" grade or worse. Any words, phrases, sentences, etc., not your own must be contained within quotes, or shown as an indented block excerpt, and properly cited within the text.
5) Follow APA formatting rules for both your paper and your References.
6) Graphics are OK, but not required, do not count toward required length, and must be properly credited
Environmental Issue Project - Introduction & Instructions (Week 2) as section headings
For a major part of your grade, you are going to research and complete an environmental issues paper. This will help you build the skills necessary to develop an informed opinion and present that opinion in written form. This project will serve as a final assessment for the course. Using the content of the course, critically evaluate and analyze a controversial environmental issue of your choosing. You must examine the pros, cons, compromises, and tradeoffs of the issue by gathering credible information from various sources and assess the scientific credibility of the information. You will then develop from this information a well thought out paper that will address the major players involved, relevant cited facts, and a clearly identified opinion.
The first part of this project will be to submit a topic to your instructor for approval. Research the topic using online library, the online library, scientific journals, government documents, books, science magazines, and personal interviews. Peer reviewed sources should form the basis of your paper. Use a minimum of 6 sources. The final paper should be double-spaced, 12 point, and 6 to 8 pages in length with citations in APA format. Anytime you use the writings or ideas of others as though they were your own, you are plagiarizing (even if you paraphrase). All information and ideas that are not a part of general knowledge must be cited. When in doubt, cite!
Your final paper should address the following key points:
· The Controversy: Identify the controversy
· The Major Players: Who is involved? Why are they involved?
· Important ...

Your final paper should address the following key points:
· The Controversy: Identify the controversy
· The Major Players: Who is involved? Why are they involved?
· Important Facts: State relevant facts concerning the issue. Try
to separate fact from opinion. Try not to show your own bias.
Properly use APA citations
· Side One: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources
· Side Two: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources
· Your Opinion and Rationale: I believe that..., We should..., I
feel that... Use supporting arguments and rationale. What
arguments would you use to present to those who disagree with
you? Cite all of your sources.
· References: Alphabetize your sources. Make sure there are
sources representing both sides of the issue.
The schedule of deliverables for this project are:
3. Week 02 - Topic Submission
Week 03 - Begin Research
Week 04 - Reference List
Week 05 - Rough Draft - Peer Review
Week 06 - Final Paper
Select a movie that focuses on a particular stage of
development. Your task will be to identify concepts/theories
that are discussed in the text and indicate the extent to which
the movie has accurately portrayed your developmental stage of
interest.
Select a film and get permission to proceed to watch the film.
Submit your movie for approval (via Canvas; week 4 module)
before 11:59pm on 11/8.
View the Movie
Summarize the storyline and main characters (1 page Max)
Identify three concepts that are covered in the text regarding
your selected stage of development (Hint: create a header in
your paper for each theme, e.g., Parenting Style, Attachment,
Friendship in Adolescence)
For each concept briefly summarize what psychologists
empirically know about this concept (cite the text or other
sources for the information) and then discuss how each theme
was portrayed in the film. Were they accurate depictions of the
concept?
View the movie again. Did you miss anything?
Write a conclusion. Include what you would add or change
about the film to reflect the empirical understanding of
development. Also note whether or not you are left with any
questions about the concepts you chose. If not, tell why not and
if you are, what questions remain?
Avoid Plagiarism! Create a reference page and make sure that
you cite your work throughout the paper, following APA
format. (NOTE: You may simply use your textbook and the
4. movie. Using additional sources is not required)
Submit paper by 3:00pm on 12/13.
FORMAT
The report should be typed in black, 12-point, Times New
Roman font
Include an APA-formatted title page.
NO abstract is required.
Reports should include headers for each of the 5 required
section
Movie Summary
Concepts/Theories (one for each; there should be 3)
Conclusion (Include proposed changes/Remaining
Questions).
Paraphrase! Do not include any direct quotes from your
references unless you are defining a term.
APA-style References
At the end there should be a reference page (include at
least the movie and your textbook)
For every citation in the text, the source should be on the
reference page.
Do not include any sources on the reference page that you
did not actually cite in the paper.
The paper should be 5 pages (the title and reference pages do
NOT count toward the page requirement). There will be a
penalty for papers that are too long (more than 6 pages) or too
short (fewer than 5).
Use 1” margins
Double-space the paper
Your writing should be formal and professional. Your work
should not read like a casual conversation you would have with
a friend.
Avoid using contractions (e.g., write “cannot” instead of
“can’t”)
Paper should be in APA format. For more style help, visit
