  • 2. INTRODUCTION     Over  the  past  few  years  there  has  been  a  drasVc  reducVon  in  poliVcally  moVvated  violence  and  related  social  problems  in  the   country,   with   the   deepening   of   democracy   since   the   1994   democraVc   elecVons.   The   insVtuVons   of   democracy,   which   include  judiciary  and  legal  system,  security  system,  and  social  reconstrucVon  programs  are  fast  changing  the  character  of   the  South  African  society.  However,  new  challenges  are  developing,  stretching  a  new  democracy  to  its  limits.       There   are   fundamental   challenges   facing   townships   in   the   country,   parVcularly   KwaMashu   in   environmental   issues.   Kwa-‐Zulu   Natal  communiVes  in  environmental  parVcipaVon  are  challenged  precisely  because  of  the  geopoliVcal  and  socio  economic   condiVons  perculiar  to  the  Province  itself.  Therefore,  any  intervenVon  requires  deeper  appreciaVon  of  these  condiVons,  and   therefore  intervenVon  programmes  that  provide  sustainable  soluVon.       The  main  characterisVcs  of  Kwa-‐Zulu  Natal  townships  not  parVcipaVng  in  environmental  issues  are  as  a  result  of  :       • Rapid  popula*on  growth.   • The  high  poverty  trends  in  the  Province.   • Lack  of  environmental  related  informa*on  to  the  public.   • Lack  of  health  and  educa*on  services  to  promote  environmental  awareness.   • Lack  of  industrial  par*cipa*on  in  figh*ng  against  hazardous  waste.   • Ineffec*ve  waste  collec*on  and  street  cleaning  systems.   • Lack  of  law  enforcement  against  illegal  dumping  and  liBering   • Lack  of  waste  avoidance  and  minimisa*on  technology   • Lack  of  government  par*cipa*on  in  promo*ng  environmental  programmes.   • Lack  of  community  training  in  environmental  related  programmes.   • Ineffec*ve  recycling  methods.   …………………………  Hence  KwaMashu  Ecological  Excursion  to  build  and  understanding  to  school  going  children
  • 3. THE  PROPOSED  SOLUTION       The  challenges  facing  our  communiVes  in  Kwa-‐Zulu  Natal  Townships  as  summarized   above  require  a  carefully  thought-‐out  soluVon,  whose  characterisVcs  must  be  the   following:         •  A  comprehensive  and  integrated  soluVon,  unleashing  energies  and  resources  of          various  stakeholders.   •  A  small  coordinaVng  team,  tapping  into  exisVng  insVtuVons  and  organizaVons,        rather  than  duplicaVng  or  creaVng  a  new  bureacracy,  and,  therefore  efficient.   •  Accountability,  transparency,  and  empowering.   •  Sustainability,  through  creaVng  capacity  within  communiVes,  exisVng  insVtuVons        and  organizaVons,  and  individuals.   •  Independent  in  all  aspects,  in  order  to  ensure  speedily  delivery  and  objecVvity.       Our  project  is  an  integrated  environmental  programme  designed  to  mobilize  school   going  youth  in  the    township  of  KwaMashu,  in  order  to  gain  amongst  the  few  green   colours  in  their  hearts  and  come  back  to  help  their  communi*es  they  come  from.
  • 4.     The  objecVves  of  the  programme  to:       •  To  mobilise  our  youth  and  communiVes’  energies  towards  a  massive          awareness  campaign  of  environmental  educaVon.   •  To  develop  and  implement  a  high-‐profile  environmental  awareness     •  Campaign  involving  the  community  from  incepVon  to  implementaVon.   •  Develop  and  implement  a  recycling  programme  amongst  our  communiVes.   •  Organize  workshops  around  all  environmental  Campaigns.   •  Develop  and  implement  training  support  programme  for  environmental            issues.   •  Promote  the  community  involvement  in  our  environment  awareness        campaigns   •  System  development  in  fighVng  brown  waste  collecVon  and  cleaning  in  our        townships.
  • 5.      METHODOLOGY       In  order  to  implement  the  programme  speedily,  smoothly,  whilst  enforcing   synergies  among  parVcipants,  several  methodologies  will  be  applied.  More  than   one  method  will  be  applied  in  each  project  within  the  programme,  depending  on   the  intended  objecVve.  The  following  methods  will  be  of  central  focus:       •  Workshops   •  Conferences   •  Debates   •  Training   •  Student  speaker  forums   •  Role-‐models  speaker  forums   •  Beauty  Contests   •  Excursions  and  summer  camps   •  Entertainment  (concerts,  exhibiVons,  fesVvals  etc.)   •  Sports  CompeVVons.                   Our  team  has  concluded  that  the  above  methods  will  ensure  that  the  youth  are   directly  involved  in  project  development,  management,  and  implementaVon.  This   approach  will  ensure  that  the  youth  in  schools  is  not  “preached-‐at”  but  a  more   boiom-‐up  and  parVcipaVve  approach  advanced
  • 6.          PROPOSED  PROJECTS         Economic  health  and  stability   •  CreaVng  jobs  with  improvements  to  school  faciliVes.   •  Saving  schools  money  with  conservaVon  measures  (Solar  Use,  HarvesVng  Water  etc)       •  Preparing  students  for  the  green  economy.   •  Strengthening  the  naVon's  energy  security.     •  Conserving  criVcal  natural  resources  (Water  Leakage  Project  to  all  schools)       Student  Achievement   •  health,  wellness,  and  achievement   •  well-‐rounded  educaVon   •  OUR  ARMS  CODE,  FLAG  &    NATIONAL  TREASURES  knowledge  and  engagement   •  college  and  career  preparedness     •  civic  skills  and  values
