2. 1. What’s a computer network?
2. Categories of computer networks:
2.1. Local area networks or LANs.
2.2. Metropolitan area networks or MANs.
2.3. Wide area networks or WANs.
3. Fundamental elements
4. Internet access
3. A computer network is a set of computers
connected to each other so they can share
resources and exchange information.
4. We can divide the computer networks in three
types:
1. Local area networks or LANs.
2. Metropolitan area networks or MANs, made
up of several LANS.
3. Wide area networks or WANs, covering a
country or continent.
5. The LANs are
computer
networks that
interconnect
computers in a
limited area such as a
home, school, compu
ter laboratory or
office building, using
network media.
7. A MAN is a computer network that usually spans a city
or a large campus. A MAN usually interconnects a
number of LANs using a high-capacity backbone
technology, such as fiber-optical links, and provides
up-link services to WAN and the Internet.
8. A WAN is a network that covers a broad
area (i.e. any telecommunications
network that links across
metropolitan, regional or national
boundaries) using private or
public network transports.
They are also call Wireless LANs.
9. They use electromagnetic waves to transmit
data.
Networks with a combination of wired and
wireless devices use wireless access points or
WAP that can transmit data through wires or
electromagnetic waves.
10. An adaptor (or
Network Card network card) to
send and receive
information
to and from
other computers.
11. The hub distributes all Hub
of the information it
receives among the
other computers in the
network.
12. A cable similar to a RJ45 connector
telephone wire with
an RJ45 connector at
the end which
lets the
information pass
through it.
13. We can use coaxial and optical
fiber cables for this function.
Optical fiber cable Coaxial cable
14. We can connect to the Internet in two
different ways.
What are they?
15. Using Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS), in which one
computer is switched
on all the time so that all
the communication can go
through it.
16. Using a router, a
device which detects
data and directs it to
and from the Internet.
17. But network sharing has got one
disadvantage.
What could it be?
18. In order for the
other users
Us to be able to access the
Internet,
the computer with
all the shared
elements must be
switched on at all
times.
