Why MOOCs?
Nothing has more potential to lift more people out of
poverty—by providing them an affordable education to
get a job or improve in the job they have. Nothing has
more potential to unlock a billion more brains to solve
the world’s biggest problems. And nothing has more
potential to enable us to reimagine higher education than
the massive opezn online course, or MOOC, platforms
that are being developed by the likes of Stanford and the
MIT and companies like Coursera and Udacity.
The need for MOOCs is wonderfully summed up by Thomas L
Friedman in one of his opened posts in New York Times

Why MOOCs contd.?
By democratizing the
learning and letting the
learners choose a course
without any pre qualifications
By making education specially
higher education affordable to
all.
By making learning multifaceted as
thousands of learners from different
geographies, cultures, occupations
are participating in MOOCs

Few Examples
Demonstrating the Power
of MOOCs
A student in Cairo, Egypt was
taking a Circuit Course through
Coursera and decided to drop out
as he was facing difficulty. In
response others students of Cairo
undertaking the same course
invited him to a tea house and
offered him help to stay in the
course.
An autistic 17 year student is able
to take a poetry course (his first
ever real course) from Penn
University through Coursera as he
can sit in front of a computer but
cannot visit University Campus.

Types of MOOCs
MOOCs are still evolving specially on the design and
delivery front and hence can be classified as:
xMOOC-Most common form of MOOCs
cMOOC-MOOCs build around the concept of connectivity

Types of MOOCs
Use specially designed platform
which allows enrolments of large
number of learners and storage of
digital material
Pedagogy structure is mainly in
the form of On-Demand video
lectures with a structured content
followed by open forums and
discussion with our without
moderation by the instructor.
Online assessments and peer
assessments as a part of the course
Use more of open platforms
like Moodle, Blackboard and
open source LMS as well as
web conferencing tools like
Adobe Connect.
Pedagogy is unstructured and
relies largely on the content
generated by the learners .
No formal assessment,
however participants may
share feedbacks.

If MOOCs have to survive they have to
overcome
Typically the completion rates of MOOCs are pegged at anywhere
between 3% at the lower end to 15% at the higher end.
The unusually high drop out rates or low completion rates.

The Future of MOOCs
Developing a credible credentials system to verify the
learner’s knowledge on the course is something which
MOOCs will have to master
Designing and pedagogy is going to be the key to the future of
MOOCs.
• A design and pedagogy style that ensures high engagement level
of learners by including badges in the course sub topics and
• Creating suspense and hooks to come back the course will
become mandatory going forward.
